HOVE Lawns is a treasured open space which is enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

It is hugely popular with dog walkers, youngsters playing and people enjoying the sea air in a relaxing environment.

But that tranquility was shattered over the course of five days when a group of travellers moved in.

The travelling community tend to say that they just want somewhere to stop off for a few days which is all well and good, but there are times when they don’t do themselves any favours.

This latest stopover in Hove has certainly upset some business owners and residents.

Piles of rubbish were left strewn across the open space after the travellers were threatened with an eviction notice and finally left of their own accord.

Schoolchildren who were there to pick up litter as a gesture of goodwill joined with residents to help clear up, for which they deserve plenty of praise.

More worrying, however, was one business owner, a cafe proprietor, telling of the intimidation he had faced from some members of the group, including youngsters on bikes.

In addition, a dog walker said he avoided the area for four days because of his fears.

Everyone has a right to decide on whatever lifestyle they choose to follow, provided they act within the law.

But it is important to fit in with the local community, no matter how short a stay it might prove to be.

It appears that was certainly not the case in this instance which is why many people are extremely wary when travellers turn up unannounced.
