USE of medicinal cannabis is to be reviewed by the Government.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid made the announcement yesterday following calls by former Conservative Party leader William Hague saying the war on drugs has been “comprehensively and irreversibly lost”.

We asked some of Brighton’s politicians and a user of cannabis oil for their thoughts on the argument – and it hangs in the balance.

Mr Javid said his reasons for calling the review were the two cases of children suffering from severe epilepsy who were denied cannabis oil to treat their seizures.

He said in the House of Commons the “situation we find ourselves in currently is not satisfactory”.

Lord Hague’s argument, published in the Daily Telegraph, said the Government should be “bold” and follow Canada’s policy and legalise cannabis for recreational use.

He said: “The idea that this can be driven off the streets and out of people’s lives by the state is deluded.

“Cannabis is ubiquitous, and issuing orders to the police to defeat its use is about as up to date and relevant as asking the Army to recover the Empire. The battle is effectively over.”

It is also said that legalising marijuana would provide a huge boost for the economy through new taxes.

Lloyd Russell-Moyle, MP for Brighton Kemptown, agrees with legalising the drug for medicinal purposes.

He told The Argus: “I am sceptical about the legalisation of cannabis.

“I am extremely positive about the decriminalisation of it.

“I think it should be provided medically if people need it. It should be used on prescription.

“However, people who abuse it should not be criminalised, but they should be medically treated for the addiction they have.”

Mr Russell-Moyle said he is “open” to the debate of having cannabis legalised for recreational use, but not with the view of making money from it.

He added: “I don’t think drugs policies and health policies should be based on what is going to make us money, otherwise you go down the line of letting 16-year-olds buy cigarettes.

“They need to get rid of the black market and regulate the product.”
