THE hundreds of people who braved an obstacle course in the hot weather for charity are all superheroes – whether they were wearing capes or not.

Martlets Hospice, which is based in Hove and provides care and support for those living with terminal illness, held their superhero-themed Kapow race on Saturday, July 14 in Preston Park in Brighton between 11am and 1.30pm.

More than 300 people of all ages took on the obstacles, many of who wore superhero fancy dress costumes, such as Batman and Superman, and painted their faces.

Fatboy Slim AKA Norman Cook was amongst the runners battling their way through the obstacle course with smiles on their faces.

There were ten giant and colourful inflatables of all kinds to climb up, bounce on, slide down and shoot through as the contestants tried to finish the course in the fastest time.

A foam bath just before the finishing line served as a refreshing finale after all their hard work.

Everyone felt the need to cool down after running and jumping in the scorching sun, taking advantage of the free cups of water.

Some even poured whole bottles over on their heads at the end of the race.

Each runner paid an entrance fee of £25 for adults, £15 for children and £65 for two children and two adults.

They also raised sponsorship money, with all proceeds going to Martlets to support the work that they do with terminally ill people and their families.

Anyone who is at least 1.2 metres tall was allowed to take part.

Clem Hunnisett, event fundraiser for Martlets, said: “It has been a great day of family fun in the heart of Brighton.

“It was great to see Norman Cook running today, as well as all of the other participants who worked really hard.

“It is a 5-kilometre course if you do two laps, which is not easy in this heat.

“But the race is open to all ages and abilities, and everyone who has taken part seems to have really enjoyed it.

“We’ve had a family of Ninja Turtles, some buzzing bees, and lots of other wonderful costumes.

“A lot of families have taken part.”

“So far more than £5,000 has been pledged which is incredible.”

Sam Dowsett and Craig Browse, from Crawley, completed the obstacle course dressed as Wonder Woman and Thor.

Sam said: “This is our hen and stag do as we are getting married.

“We are running for my dad, because Martlets cared him when he was dying so this is our way of remembering him and making him part of our weekend.”

Brighton-based industrial computing manufacturer Amplicon was the headline sponsor for the event this year.

Will and Anna Holland were running on behalf of the company as they scaled the obstacles.

Will said: “We both did the full two laps of the course, the weather is a bit too hot for it really.

“Jumping in the foam at the end of the race was really nice, I definitely could have stayed in there for a bit longer.”
