THE work of some of the most challenging young people aged 16 to 24 has been saluted at an awards ceremony.

They have been recognised for achieving vital qualifications and making the first steps towards their career goals.

They were presented with certificates to acknowledge their progress on Skills Training UK’s Traineeship programme.

The event also marked the official opening of Skills Training UK’s new training centre at Tower Point in Brighton city centre.

Learners gained valuable work experience and skills with local and national employers, as well as achieving vocational, English and maths qualifications.

The event was attended by the Mayor for Brighton and Hove, Councillor Dee Simson, alongside businesses and support agencies who have worked with the training provider to develop employment and training opportunities for young people.

Councillor Simson, said: “Young people need to know they are doing things that will help them in their future and that there is a positive destination to their learning journey.

“This event really brings this to the fore and it has been a pleasure to be a part of, as well as celebrating the success of young learners and inspiring others in the process.”

Many of the learners arrive at Skills Training UK with low confidence and some have faced challenging circumstances in their personal lives but, with one to one support, they are able to progress onto an apprenticeship, further education, or employment.

Amongst the learners was Callum Evans, 20, from Brighton, who received an Outstanding Achievement Award after completing his English and maths qualifications and embarking on an NHS work placement with West Sussex NHS Trust.

Callum said: “The skills I’ve learnt during my traineeship have helped me secure a catering job within the NHS at Elm Grove Café.

“I’m incredibly thankful for the tutors who have helped me build my communication skills along the way and secure my work placement.”

Skills Training UK’s Brighton Centre has moved to its new location from Portslade Aldridge Community Academy.

It will continue to build relationships with employers, schools, local authorities and other agencies, including housing and health, to ensure the hardest to reach young people can take their first steps towards employment or continued learning.
