DISGUSTED residents have slammed both a council and litterers themselves for the amount of rubbish in the streets.

The underpass at the end of West Street in Brighton is ridden with junk, from plastic bags to cardboard.

A pushchair and a traffic cone have also been thrown into the subway, which takes people from West Street onto the beach.

Jordan Healy, who lives in Brighton, took the above photo and posted it to the Brighton People Facebook group.

Another man commented: “I talk regularly to the litter pickers on the beach and they tell me about how their team numbers have been cut.

“But the main problem is public education.

“People should be fined and publicly humiliated for littering, £50 per item on-the-spot fines and a poster campaign with money raised donated to local charities.”

A woman commented: “What the hell is happening to Brighton?

“It breaks my heart to see this wonderful city filthy with rubbish everywhere and a graffiti-strewn mess.

“For goodness’ sake Brighton Council, get a grip.”

Brighton and Hove’s in-house street cleaning service, City Clean, is responsible for collecting rubbish and picking up litter in the city.

A council spokeswoman said: “The subway at the bottom of West Street has been closed to the public for some time.

“We are currently arranging to get access to the site to clear the rubbish which has accumulated.

“This will require specialist cleaning equipment in order to safely remove and dispose of a large amount of needles and other drug paraphernalia.”

Talking about the demand placed on the service, she added: “Demand is always high, especially during the summer months when we have millions of tourists coming to the city.”

It comes a week after The Argus reported that City Clean has missed thousands of bin collections across the city in the first six months of the year.
