A COMMUNITY event honoured by The Argus makes its return next month backing a popular children’s charity.

The high octane action of Unlimited National Banger racing is coming to Arlington Raceway in Hailsham on Saturday August 4 to raise funds for Rockinghorse.

The Bears are regarded as the country’s largest and most respected banger racing motorsport team.

It will be their sixth charity meeting for Rockinghorse in as many years.

Last year it was recognised by readers of The Argus as Community Event of the Year at an awards ceremony at the Brighton Dome.

Bears captain Nigel Riley said: “We received many compliments for organising such an outstanding meeting last year, culminating in us receiving the Community Award from the readers of The Argus for our efforts.

“We intend though to build upon that success to make this year’s event an evening that race fans simply won’t forget.”

The action begins at 6pm for the evening of “full on” motor racing entertainment from some much-loved characters, including The Bears frontman Nutty Nige.

It is expected a packed crowd will turn out for the event in support of the popular charity.

Over the years, The Bears Bash event has raised more than £100,000 for Rockinghorse.

Last year, the meeting raised £33,300 for the charity’s 50th anniversary appeal “Sussex Giving for Sussex Children”.

Michael Burnage MBE, event organiser and Rockinghorse ambassador, said: “It is a lot of fun working with the guys in The Bears and to be able to raise some serious money for the hospital.

“The difference we make as a group to young children’s lives with the new equipment we purchase is staggering and incredibly humbling.”

Rockinghorse is the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and a vital supporter of the neighbouring Trevor Mann Baby Unit in Brighton.

Spectators are advised to arrive early.
