1. Start at the recreation ground on a circular road called ‘Hollycroft’ off Chapel Lane, East Chiltington. Make your way to Chapel Lane and turn left to the T-junction. You are already on the course of the old Roman road now known as the Sussex Greensand Way (SGW). At the T-junction turn right on Novington Lane and head gradually uphill. In 250 yards at the brow of the hill turn left along a footpath on a concrete track signed ‘Wootton Farm’. Follow for 600 yards and soon after a short bend to the left turn left along a bridleway down the side of the farm complex between bushes.

2. In 400 yards reach the railway line. Go through 2 gates either side of the train tracks. Follow the path out onto Chiltington Lane. Turn right. Walk along the lane for about 500 yards until you start reaching houses. At the first property on the right go up a driveway to find a stile ahead. Go over and walk the rectangular field aiming for the far right-hand side corner. Go over the stile. Make your way into the open field, keep left, in 40 yards follow the hedge-line as it turns left - stay left. In 200 yards at the next field corner follow it round to the right, in 40 yards find an exit through the hedge on the left out onto Chiltington Lane. Turn left. In 80 yards pass a property on your left called ‘Romans’. Carry on for a further 150 yards and as the lane bears left take a footpath on your right over a stile. The path is roughly veering right. Under trees cross a footbridge. Continue straight ahead across the next field. Once opposite you should find a stepped stile. After the stile make your way into the next field and again head on up straight ahead but slightly to the right. Once it levels off keep an eye out for a gate leading out onto Wickham Lane. Turn left.

3. In 300 yards the SGW would have crossed over the lane. Continue to meet the busier A275. Turn right. In 50 yards cross the road to take a bridleway on the right into Folly Wood. Follow this woodland path for half a mile. Emerge onto Town Littleworth Road and turn right. Gradually walk uphill with the border of Barcombe parish to the left and Hamsey parish on your right.

4. In 300 yards at the brow of the hill turn right on a footpath to begin your return, skirt the right of a bushy pond and stay within the same field following the left hedgerow. Follow the left hedge into the next field and here you are not far from the SGW. At the next corner go into the next field ahead left and keep right along the side of woodland. As it veers left the SGW would have come in from behind you into the wood. Carry on down to meet the A275. Turn left. In 40 yards cross the road to take on your right a footpath into a field. Aim for the telegraph pole. Then continue straight on to reach Wickham Lane.

5. Cross over and you are at point 3 where you were before where you turned left, now take the gate to the left of that into a field. Keep to the right-hand edge. 30 yards before you reach the first corner turn left to cut it off and aim for bushes to exit via planks onto Chiltington Lane. Turn right. In 100 yards go up a slope to the left and then turn left over an arched-wooden bridge above the railway. Follow a bridleway for 200 yards then turn right on a footpath in advance of a property. Follow its boundary and then out across a field ahead to trees. Go through trees to emerge in a corner of a field and head on upwards towards a cottage. The footpath goes to the left of it round to the back and then ahead along its drive.

6. Soon reach point 2 where you earlier had turned left but now simply carry on along the track out to Novington Lane. Once at the T-junction cross over the road to a stile into a field and follow a footpath diagonally right downwards. Reach a stile at the far corner to re-enter Chapel Lane. Immediately to the left is the Jolly Sportsman pub should you need a refreshment. Otherwise turn right. Hollycroft is 100 yards on the left. Retrace your steps back to the recreation ground.
