TWO projects from A&F Pilbeam Construction Ltd won awards at the Sussex Heritage awards.

The schemes from the company based in Underdown Road, Southwick, are Flats 1-9 Ship Street, Brighton and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum.

Ship Street won the Mid-Scale Residential Award and the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum won the Public and Community Award.

The flats at 51 Ship Street Brighton are in a Grade II listed building, located within the Old Town Conservation Area, which was badly damaged by squatters.

The exterior building fabric had badly deteriorated causing the property to be identified as a building at risk.

Works were carried out to restore, refurbish and convert the property to flats.

The Gateway Project, Weald and Downland Living Museum at Singleton provided two new buildings located at the entrance and 850sq/m of space for entry facilities, shop, three orientation and interpretation galleries, café, kitchens, community space and other ancillary accommodation.

The project used many traditional materials and techniques, such as oak framing, local clay roof tiles and timber shingles, intertwined with modern products such as a bio-mass boiler and a green roof.

MD Simon Pilbeam said: “We are delighted that two of our projects have received recognition for quality and craftsmanship.”
