The fire at South Downs was put out by firefighters yesterday evening (Saturday, July 21).

Two fire engines and four Land Rovers were called reports of a fire on the South Downs.

The incident happened at 2.33pm, in Friston near Old Willingdon Road. Firefighters left the scene at 6.49pm.

Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed to avoid the smoke.

After the incident, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a fire safety warning at the countryside.

A spokesman said: "Following the large fire in the open on grass land at Friston, we are urging members of the public to take care in the countryside especially during this hot weather.

"Every year in the UK, 1,700 farm buildings and 66,000 acres of grassland are destroyed by fire.

"Our advice includes avoid using open fires in the countryside, extinguish cigarettes and other smoking materials properly, only camp and picnic in designated areas and sunlight shining through glass can start large fires - take glass bottles or jars home or put them in a waste or recycling bin."

The fire service has been contacted but were unable to confirm the cause of the blaze.
