THE thoughtless actions of just ONE litterbug led to rubbish being strewn across a large expanse of Manchester Street yesterday.

A black bin bag, which had been crammed full of empty takeaway cartons, was dumped outside the entrance to one of the underground car parks yesterday morning and within 30 minutes it had been ripped apart by a group of hungry seagulls.

As the day progressed seagulls continually circled and swooped from the sky as the discarded cartons were picked up and then dropped in disappointment by the succession of birds.

One angry resident of a nearby block of flats, who didn’t want to be named, said: “This is just getting ridiculous now.

“People are just dumping their rubbish everywhere, just look at the seafront for example, it is a disgrace that people don’t either put disposable cups and food cartons in the bin or take it home with them.

“Manchester Street is also becoming increasingly bad.

“As well as the bin bag which had just been dumped without being tied, I witnessed a group of five people who were eating fish and chips, having clearly just come from the seafront and they just dumped the cartons in the gutter.

“I tried to remonstrate with them but they responded with a volley of verbal abuse before they walked away laughing about it.

“We know that Brighton and Hove has a huge problem with litter and to be fair the council is doing its level best to combat what is becoming an increasing problem.

“But it is the thoughtless actions of an increasing number of people, which is in danger of turning the city into a dump.”
