WOW, Gareth Southgate must be really proud.

The England manager captivated the nation as he led the country to the semi-finals of the World Cup before they bowed out to Croatia in the last four, but Crawley’s own has certainly given football supporters of the national team cause for optimism for the first time in decades.

He has already received plenty of plaudits but has now been captured for posterity thanks to Brighton artist Robert Burns.

Robert, 71, has long been inspired by art’s Renaissance period and Gareth has certainly been given the full treatment, beard, waistcoat and all.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise really as Robert has already painted former England skipper and Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney as Francis of Assisi.

He has also been inspired by Michaelangelo’s work on the Sistine Chapel, so much so that much of the intricate artwork has been replicated by Robert in his home, turning it in the process into a tourist attraction.

With the Premier League season now in full swing it is easy to forget England’s heroics just a couple of months ago in Russia.

It was so near for those of us who support England, yet ultimately so far.

Nevertheless, Gareth undoubtedly restored pride into the national team with a blend of young and vibrant players who have given us renewed hope.

There are still just under two years to go before England take part in the next European Championships, but this time the chances are Gareth’s team will be serious contenders rather than also-rans. One can only wonder what Robert will paint then.
