A RACIST has been ordered to pay a fine after abusing a police officer while in custody.

The Missionman had been taken to Crowhurst Road detention centre in Brighton in May, where he called Sergeant Alvin Lee a “Japanese ****”.

During a farcical court appearance after sacking his solicitor to represent himself, he called magistrate Robert Macrowan a “p****” and shouted at him: “Are you some kind of paedophile?”

While cross examining Sgt Lee, he asked: “Are you actually Japanese?”

Missionman was found guilty after being led back to the cells at Brighton Magistrates’ Court. He was fined £180, and told to pay court costs and a victim surcharge.

The 40-year-old of no fixed address changed his name by deed poll when he was 24.

Missionman repeatedly interrupted prosecutor Suzanne Soros and Mr Macrowan, but was told to be quiet.

It started on May 10, when Missionman was “argumentative and aggressive” towards the duty solicitor and officers at the centre after being arrested.

Sgt Lee and a colleague used an “escort grip” to take Missionman by his wrist and arms back to his cell after his solicitor had found him too difficult to deal with.

As he was taken back to his cell he shouted at Sgt Lee: “F*** off you Japanese ****.”

He claimed to have been assaulted by Sgt Lee, and claims his finger was “snapped”.

Sgt Lee said he hadn’t touched Missionman’s finger at any stage, and said the defendant hadn’t raised any complaint at the time.

In court Sgt Lee said he is used to difficult suspects in the cells. He said: “It was completely disrespectful. He was just shouting and swearing.”

Missionman was furious in court, perhaps angry that his previous name Mr Oliver was used, as he believed he was being linked to another defendant with the same name.

He asked angrily: “Why did you not arrest me under the name Missionman, I haven’t been called Oliver since I was 24. Missionman is my name by deed poll, it’s the name on my bank card.

“F***ing officers are trying to blame me for an incident by somebody else. Why are you trying to nonce me off?”

Sgt Lee told the court the police were “satisfied” that they had arrested the right person.

Before proceedings, Missionman had denied the charge but said he only made the comments “under duress”.

He said: “I was put in that situation, it is not the behaviour I normally do, sir.”

Missionman has previous convictions for assaulting police officers, and is currently serving a prison sentence for criminal damage.

After he was led back to the cells, Mr Macrowan said to Sgt Lee: “I’m sorry that you have had to put up with that abuse.”
