SHOPPERS were stunned when they saw what one woman had in her supermarket trolley – six giant puppies.

The dogs were being taken to a vet appointment.

Their trip to Pets At Home in Eastbourne was supposed to last 30 minutes.

But it took so long to get the St Bernards into the trolleys and so many people wanted to stop them for a cuddle that it ended up taking three and a half hours.

Owner Angela Bateman had to be helped to carry the pups from the car park into the store by her husband and daughter plus a shop assistant and receptionist.

She said: “It was supposed to be a quick trip for their vaccinations and doggy MOT. But people were just wanting to cuddle the puppies.

“One person was even in tears at how cute they are.

“I was carrying one or two at time we were passing them round to everybody.”

Angela, 53, and husband Alan, 57, from Hankham in Eastbourne, have had kept St Bernards for many years.

They hit the headlines in 2007 when their pet Poppy surprised vets by producing a remarkable 13 puppies.

Now they have done it again – their dog Remy produced another baker’s dozen of cuddly St Bernards ten weeks ago.

Sadly two and the litter is now down to six after the five were found new homes across the county.

Mrs Bateman is still looking for good homes for the remaining puppies. She said: “People think that to have a St Benard you have to have a lot of space, but really it’s all about the quality of time you spend with them.

“They’re lethargic animals but they’re brilliant companions. Of course they do need exercise, but they’re never going to run a marathon.

“They just absorb friendship and cuddles.

“We’re looking for people but if we don’t find good homes then we will keep them.”
