A STRIKE threat at Brighton’s biggest entertainment venue has been called off until further notice.

The three-month long industrial action which was set to begin in September could have led to cancellations of performances by Tom Odell, Florence and the Machine, The Human League, Culture Club, and WWE wrestling.

But now the dispute between staff at the venue and the council is close to being resolved, according to workers’ union the GMB.

GMB Sussex branch secretary Mark Turner said: “It’s not often you’ll hear me say something like this but suspending the threat of industrial action against Brighton and Hove City Council at this time is the right thing to do.”

He added: “The council has shown a real willingness to settle this dispute with the venue team over the last week.

“Even though we are not quite over the line, our members have chosen to suspend all threats of industrial unrest as a sign of good faith.”

The dispute started in January and centres around employees who work at the Brighton Centre but are contracted by the council.

The GMB union claims that Brighton Centre workers at the heart of the dispute could be owed up to £15,000 each by the council due to unpaid overtime as they use practices which do not allow staff to claim overtime, even if they work seven days a week.

A council spokeswoman said: “We are committed to reaching an agreement with staff and talks are progressing well.”
