The theme of today’s Timeout is Brighton Festival in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

It was established in 1967 with artistic director Ian Hunter at the helm and has grown bigger every year since.

It has always provided some fascinating sights and some of them are captured here today.

One picture today shows a woman in an outfit made up of packaging – that was in 1990.

Far left we have a picture of a group of children wearing hand-made headwear which looks dragon-inspired.

The picture was taken in May 1987 and they were undoubtedly part of the annual Children’s Parade which kicks off the festival in spectacular fashion.

The parade, run by community arts organisation Same Sky, is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Every year, some 5,000 children from schools and community groups across the region take part and are cheered on by many thousands of spectators.

Also pictured today is Julia Everett in a costume entitled “A bottle of Champagne” in May 1987.

The caption says she is a Brighton Festival winner but we do not know exactly what the competition was, or what she won. Perhaps one of our readers could enlighten us.

We also have a person dressed as a spam salad sandwich – again, it is something of a mystery.

We have a picture of sculptures on the seafront during the 1988 festival and sandwich board entrants at the 1986 festival outside the Royal Pavilion.

Does anyone know any more about any of these photos? If you do, please let us know.
