WORTHING Churches Homeless Projects is organising a new fundraising event, Go the Distance, on Sunday September 30.

People of all ages and abilities will be walking, jogging or running along Worthing promenade to raise both awareness and money in support of the homeless.

Individuals who have once been homeless or rough sleeping will be taking part and handing out the medals at the finish line.

Sam, who has been going to St Clare’s Community Hub (6-8 Marine Place) will be running to repay the kindness that has been shown to him.

He said: “I wouldn’t be where I am without St Clare’s.

“If I can encourage anyone by running and showing that a difference can be made, I will have given something back to those who supported me.

“Taking drugs was like running away and hiding.

“Taking that first step was terrifying and scary but through the support at St Clare’s my life is starting to change.”

Anya, who works for WCHP, decided to Go the Distance as a small nod to the challenges homeless men and women overcome everyday.

Anya said: “Often, it’s just that first step of asking for help which can be a huge struggle, let alone making big changes to recover from addiction, to address debt, or to acknowledge the need for support around mental health.

“Raising money will make a difference to our projects and will help us towards reducing the numbers of rough sleepers and homeless individuals in our community.
