Vandals left a trail of destruction costing thousands of pounds as they trashed a public park.

The culprits drove onto a football pitch and performed handbrake turns, leaving tyremarks in the turf at Easthill Park in Portslade.

They covered walls with graffiti and broke a bench in the spree, which was discovered this morning.

Rubbish bins were thrown around the park and tiles on the toilet roof were damaged.

The vandals also broke paving slabs in the children's play area.

Police branded the crime "disgraceful".

Community Support Officer Nick Packham said: "This has had such an impact of the local community who use the park's facilities.

"Whoever is responsible for all this damage ought to be ashamed of themselves. It's mindless vandalism at its very worst.

"I hope that anyone with information will contact police so those responsible can be dealt with."

The park boasts a walled garden, war memorial and wildflower area.

It was once part of the 750-acre estate of Edward Blaker at Easthill House.

City councillor Bob Carden said the vandalism was part of a trend in the area.

He said: "We're getting an awful lot of problems over here. I don't know why they do it."

Anyone with information is asked to call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 quoting reference 386/13/09/2007.

reminds me of wot happened when i lived near london. But when the yobs started mouthing off about it a 'group of citezens' got together to 'pay them a visit'. Five pieces of sh1t then spent the next 12months in hospital. absolutly terrible

terrible indeed... some idiots need more than mere telling off or the 'threat' of police action, to stop them doing it again... not being able to walk would stop them in future however... if the police can't protect our community and our childrens play area's then it falls into the hands of we, the citizens to do it for them... lets find the b@stards and fill up some hospital beds... only joking of course, that would be illegal...

Not being funny here but how come no one noticed a car doing handbrake turns or bins being thrown around? That sort of car movement makes a lot of noise in any environment but being a public place I would have thought someone would have the nouse to call the old bill!

The police say "disgraceful"; I say "depressing". I the vandals would be flattered by the word "disgraceful". Badge of bad boy cred, innit. They can laugh at that and think of the police as they would disapproving parents. Something to sneer at.

Do they really want to be just worthless and "depressing"?

I used to moan about asylum seekers and other visitors to our shores, now I realise that a bigger threat is already here, British youth! I feel that I chose the wrong enemy, but now can see the way this country is going, I.E.= to the dogs! The yob, chav, hoodie culture is escalating rapidly as we all know, but what is the answer? How about, first offence= ASBO, second offence= 5 years, third offence= termination of existance? Forget that, what about leaving out the first two and going for the biggy?

The very nasty and dare I say very scary suggestions concerning what needs to be done about scum like this shows just how seriously some people feel about this 'part of society'. The even more worrying part is thats it true - it is only very heavey direct action that will stop it. Unless the courts can realise that serious vandalism and yobbishness is a most damaging factor in todays society and warrants seriously painfull custodial sentencing, together at a later date with the recovery of ALL the costs in repairing any damage. This should apply to ANYONE, regardless of their income, and should be deducted at source from wages or even benefits. Replacing a broken shop window, plus loss of profit of the shop, plus all the other costs could easily come to £2000 upwards. It should be recovered in EVERY case from the guilty party, assuming they are caught of course. By the time a few people have found their 'hilarious night out' has cost them 2-3 thousand pounds, there will be a lot less 'hilarious nights out' occuring. In any event the law abiding citizen will feel the law is on his side, not working for the yob or criminal. NEVER NEVER NEVER feel sorry for the criminal, he doesnt deserve it - feel sorry for society and the victims. The Yobs (just a general term) have to be scared of what happens to them if caught, and while a few will never change, most simply wont risk 2 years in prison for shopplifting. And after a few years there will be LESS people in prison than there is now. Half wit courts and government departments need to get EXTREMELY vindictive over criminal behaviour, otherwise people WILL take the law into their own hands.

The most depressing aspect of it is that they will have children, bring them up incompetently, and such problems will continue as these offspring trash the place in their turn. So it goes.

These vandals were once babies in buggies at whom people cooed and said, "aren't they lovely!" They did not stay lovely.

What are their parents like?

had a thought about ricky's comments at the top - trying to get into the mindset of the no-doubt-well -below-average-IQ perpetrators for a second... why bother doing something as mindless and wanton as this unless other people knew about it? other people are bound to know... peers more than likely, who would be able to pat them on the back and praise them for being so 'hard' or whatever gains kudos amoungst such 'gangs'... younger/older brothers and sisters of these idiots, the other 'gang' members as well as the criminals, need to be educated as to how to anonymously 'grass' on them without having to fear recrimination... 'crimestoppers' is all very well as a concept, but it needs to be drilled into those who are most likely to hear about and know about these crimes - i'd suggest the friends/siblings of those involved... appeal to their better nature, tell them that it's their DUTY to report crimes like this, in the gentlest but firmest way possible... the community could and should give these people up, but it's up to the government and the police to make it happen... that's THEIR duty...

3. Armed turrets
4. Keep them there

Thought we were surrounded by CCTV? Obviously not, or this wouldn't have happened. What do we pay taxes for? Find out who did this, prosecute, and fine both the parents and kids involved. No more ****-footing around. I expect when this does go to court, kids will get a slap on the wrist, pay minimal compensation, and they'll brag about it to their mates. Bloody shocking...

hahah! here it is! knew I wouldn't have to look far down the list of today's news stories to find another report of youths disrupting/attacking a) ordinary working people going about their business, b) innocent working people's property or c) public property. think I'm going to have to stop reading the argus each day - so depressing.

How about this? Let the police do the detective work to identify these b*****ds(admittedly, I may be putting too much faith in them the cops), then, when sentenced to 10 minutes community service, people get together and "pay them a visit" to give them some REAL justice. That way, just attend the court case - no risk of mistaken identity. Someone should start a website to organise things. after all, the gangs, hoodies and chavs have them....

we all know the police won't bother, as it will mean going to much effort to get their stats up when it's so much easier to nick people for lesser offences. A friend of mine is a copper, and she confirms this is exactly what will happen. The targets the police have bear no relation (i.e. are not aligned) to what ordinary people in the street want to see happen.
I've called the police plenty of time on seeing drugs being sold on the street in portslade, vandals smashing bus shelters, but the powers that be decree they won't bother. Thats why no one calls them.

i have read all the comments and can only agree with all those that state the police do not act anymore , after an assualt took place on my daughter it took 4 wks for the police to take a statement and they still haven't visited the person even though they have the address. Their EXCUSES are , lack of resources and they have to priortise their work, Assualt isn't high on the agenda , do u really believe they will assist with this.

Both the pcso's in the area and the npt do seem to care about this sort of mindless vandalism.

Lets give Richard and his team a chance before kicking them in the nuts.

Lucy dont get uptight about people using the term 'Hoodie' thinking it reflects on your kids who also wear hooded tops. Most kids and many others wear hooded tops, and are not 'Hoodies'! A 'Hoodie' (person) has become the accepted term for a brain dead little pr1ck wearing an erected hooded top, trackies that are ten sizes too big, and trys to walks like he's carrying a football between his legs, who thinks he's hard when with at least 2 other brain dead pr1cks just like him, and therefore likely to abuse or attack innocent people on late night buses. The police usually know him by his first name, and is one day hoping to get an asbo which he can then impress (lol) his equally retarded mates with. He may mature enough in time to realise what a complete c**t he's made of himself, or he may carry on as he is and get smashed to fucck by some people on his estate who decide that Charles Bronson did a very good job in the film 'Vigilante'. Think about it.
