Three million contraband cigarettes have been uncovered at a port amongst timber pallets.

Customs officers working at Newhaven port made the discovery in an unaccompanied trailer on a ferry from Dieppe, France.

The officers searched the trailer after it had been driven off the ferry and found three million British brand cigarettes hidden amongst the 20 pallets of timber. The revenue evaded on the goods was almost £560,000. The cigarettes were found on September 13.

A 32-year-old lorry driver from Staffordshire, who had arrived at the port to collect a trailer, was arrested, interviewed and released on bail pending further enquiries.

Bob Gaiger, Revenue and Customs spokesman, said: "Customs take a very serious view of cigarette and tobacco smuggling.

"It is not a harmless tax fiddle. This type of activity harms honest businesses and costs the UK billions of pounds in lost revenue that ends up lining the pockets of criminals instead of funding vital public services."

Interesting that the profits of smoking fund vital public services, yet the government seems so keen to alienate smokers by banning them from smoking anywhere!

If you guys use this story to take the mick out of my rider (about smuggling, his apparent inability to do a days work, his made up religion, birds crap on his face, mindless MC-ing, his neighbourhood watch scheme, his latest failed court case, his ridiculous face, his rubbish kitchen, his low grade weed, his facial doodling, his third eye etc etc) sixteen or seventeen more times, I might just cry.

Pity. Smokes at £5+ a pack are way, way too expensive. £25 for 200 down the car boot is fairer. If there was not such must ridiculous duty on these, there would not be the need to smuggle would there.

Why did they DRAG the driver into it? Why did they make him the BUTT of their investigations? Never mind, the truth will eventually FILTER through all the SMOKE screen! Then all the real smugglers will ROLL UP and be arrested!
