A FIRE broke out at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton last night (Wednesday).

Six fire engines were sent to the hospital in Eastern Road, Kemp Town, at 6.22pm.

Part of the building was evacuated.

The fire was out by 7.30pm, although three fire engines remained at the scene at 7.45pm, a spokesman said.

The Argus:

He said the fire started in a basement area of the hospital, but previously said firefighters were working in a smoke-filled corridor on the fourth floor.

A member of staff said: "A fire broke out on level four of the Millennium Wing.

"It was a bit worrying at one point because we thought we were all going to be evacuated.

"I'm pretty sure it's all clear now."

One passer-by said: "I saw half a dozen fire engines and thought 'blimey' but I'm not sure what's happened.

"Chaos. Just more chaotic than usual."

It is understood that no-one was hurt.

Police were also on the scene.
