Police have named the cyclist who was killed on the A24 at Ashington yesterday.

Keith Harmer, 49, of Franklands Close, Worthing, was taken to hospital by helicopter in London after the crash which happened at about 10.40am.

He was knocked off his bike when he was overtaken by a Mercedes lorry.

The road was closed for several hours.

Sergeant Paul Jones from the Haywards Heath road policing unit said: "As a result of the helicopter being used, both carriageways of the A24 had to be shut. The whole of the northbound and one lane of the southbound carriageways were reopened as soon as the helicopter departed.

"I am anxious to trace anyone who either saw the collision or the cyclist beforehand and would ask that they call us on 0845 6070999 quoting Operation Seahorse."

Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 0845 6070999.

Leave your tributes to Mr Harmer below.

Sympathies of course but lesson to cyclists. Don't cycle on these main routes. A27 also has a few attempting it.....dangerous and not worth it. Get a car !

Sensitive, Mick. Really sensitive. And there was me thinking that what made these roads dangerous was bad drivers. Now I realise it's the cyclists' fault.

Yeah nice one Mick you plonker. What I great world it would be if we all stopped cycling and drove instead.

"Get a car!"?

What a ridiculous thing to say. The poor guy probably had one but had decided to leave it at home. Maybe he was out riding for leisure - I think a lot of the riders on the big roads seem to be fast, experienced cyclists.

He had every right to be on that road, and every right not to be killed, but I must say, I tend to avoid cycling on roads like the A24 in favour or safer, more scenic roads. But that's that not easy. The nearby A283 is probably worse with its twisting roads and poor visibility.

My deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Mr Harmer.

Having lost a friend in the same manner I know that there is nothing anybody can say to make you feel better but lots of people are thinking about you at this sad time.

From a fellow cyclist who's done that road many times,it could easily of been me.
Some people should not be driving on roads, society seems to get more and more selfish and careless to me,its deadly out there!

I ride to work on back roads and believe me they are not that much safer than A-roads, some drive at A-road speeds despite their narrowness and bends.

I too am a cyclist and have come across some plonkers who shouldn't have a driving licence, but to be fair it can't ALWAYS be the motorist's fault. I have probably done some daft and careless things on my bike but have been lucky enough to have got away with it. Also the roads are in such a bad state that a pothole could have caused this poor chap to have come off.

As a fellow cyclist, my deepset sympathise go to Keith and his family. I won't lower myself to reply to Mick of Worthing. He is beneath contempt.
