A firework found underneath a car was not attached to the vehicle, police have said.
Residents in the Pelham Terrace area of Lewes were told to stay in their homes while bomb disposal experts worked to make the area safe this afternoon.
Initial police reports said the firework had been attached to the vehicle but a spokesman confirmed this was not the case.
A 50 metre area around the scene has been cordoned off.
