A taxi driver escaped serious injury after his cab overturned on Brighton seafront.
People living in Marine Parade rushed outside and helped him from the cab after Saturday's 2.40am crash.
The badly-shaken cabbie, who has not been named, was treated by an ambulance crew at the scene.
A South East Coast Ambulance Service spokesman said the driver refused to go to hospital for a check-up.
It is believed he swerved to avoid an object in the road on the A259 near its junction with Lewes Crescent.
The taxi, a Peugeot 807 people carrier, clipped the kerb, demolished railings and overturned.
A fire crew from Roedean fire station was sent after reports that the driver was trapped.
A spokesman said: "By the time we got there people living nearby had helped to get him out and he was obviously pretty shaken.
"The eight-seater taxi was a complete write-off and its oil sump had exploded everywhere.
"We used chemical pads and sand to make the road surface safe for other vehicles."
