Gigs in cinemas are a great idea, especially for bands like Peggy Sue, who deserve a careful listen.

It felt like a real treat to sit back and listen while snippets of black and white films flickered silently in the background.

Peggy Sue sounded as brilliant as ever, doowap jazz vocals spinning witty tales of television and an imagined meeting with a depressed Superman.

The New Song Single (for that is what it is called) is made of sadder stuff but no less beautiful.

Even very decent support acts often get drowned out by chatter at gigs, but everyone hushed for Dockers MC and Noah And The Whale, and it was well worth it.

Poet Dockers MC showered us with words and stories, the best of which was a monologue told from the viewpoint of a Brixton rude girl.

Jonah And The Whale are Londoners too, but their sound is more a happy jaunt through sunny Louisville.

They're a bit Bright Eyes, a bit Johnny Cash and a bit Magic Numbers.

Ones to watch.
