Hanover residents 'too busy burning bras to care'

The owner of a world-famous tea shop today declared war on Brighton's "muesli mountain" claiming residents are too busy burning their bras and doing yoga to care about their community.

David Daly, who runs the Tea Cosy Rooms in Southover Street, said he would "rather live and trade on a council estate" than remain in affluent Hanover.

He has accused homeowners of not reporting vandalism and yobbish behaviour to keep crime figures low and house prices high.

Mr Daly, 30, who has written a book on etiquette, said he has even decided to move his celebrated tea shop to another area in Brighton and Hove.

The quaint shop made headlines across the globe after it emerged its owners had banned elbows on tables, mobile phones, slurping, handling sugar cubes and clattering of teaspoons.

A rule book has ensured customers adhere to the strict etiquette with some falling foul of the guidelines and being shown the door.

Now Mr Daly has attacked the spirit of residents in the neighbourhood after his shop suffered repeated vandalism attacks.

Mr Daly said: "Unfortunately, all people think about in this area is their property prices so they never, ever report crime.

"They would all rather turn a blind eye and keep the name of the area up with a low crime rate than stand up to yobs that are terrorising the area.

"Your house could be burning down and the people would just walk straight past and go to the pub.

"They are all too busy burning their bras, doing yoga and eating wheat free bread to even notice.

"We think Hanover has lived on its reputation of muesli mountain for far too long.

"In reality it is run down, dirty, crime ridden and an un-friendly area full of secret alcoholics.

"In my personal opinion I would rather live in Whitehawk than live in Hanover."

Mr Daly, who runs the shop with partner James Green, 26, said his business has been forced out of the area because it has been targeted by yobs, costing thousands of pounds in repairs.

He said: "We have had the shop windows smashed three times and the property vandalised, once with indelible marker." He said some of the graffiti showed lurid sex acts involving the Royal Family.

"They all have intolerances; intolerant to wheat, dairy and glucose but they all go to the pub which makes me laugh.

"I don't think any of them have actually been told by a doctor they are intolerant to it, I think they just have too much time on their hands."

Sussex Police statistics show Hanover and Elm Grove has one of the lowest crime rates in the city.

The latest figures for July show 75 crimes in the area. There were 1,094 reported incidents in central Brighton.

Hanover councillor Bill Randall said: "In my experience Hanover is the best and most supportive community I have lived in.

"It is extremely friendly and people look out for each other.

"The crime figures are not high and he is wrong to suggest there is a conspiracy amongst residents to keep figures low."

What do you think?

It's not clear in the article-has the shop closed already, prior to its move? I'd like to visit before it goes.Probably won't be the same anywhere else. Fancy tea and a fairy cake Flat Foot Soozie?

It certainly sounds as if somebody has put something in Mr Daly's tea.

It's unlikely he'll be voting Green.

Very true, my parents and myself lived in muesli hill and had to move away due to yobs and the police were not intereseted. the whole area is so politically correct it stinks. Come on tea shop move to Hove, we remain civilised.

Who at The Argus is shagging this lanky pillock then?

This guy gets more free press from The Argus than anyone else. With a mouth on him like that and his inane and bitter spoutings about his neighbours, its no real surprise that people target his silly fad tea shop.

"Rather live in Whitehawk" Yeah? Good luck there mate. I am sure they will love someone like you, especially as you clearly have distain of the area to refer to it in such a derogatory manner.

Anne, Hanover says...
5:03pm Tue 8 Jan 08

Mr Daly has an absolute cheek in saying this about Hanover. I've lived here for years and it's a peaceful area.

OK - so there's a small amount some vandalism behaviour (but this is endemic throughout most large towns/cities)/ You cannot really report anything unless you see it happen and I'm sure most Hanover residents WOULD report vandalism and yobbish behaviour.

If he doesn't like the area he should move to Whitehawk. He will soon notice that there is vandalism there too.

I'm sure most Hanover residents don't actually use his cafe which has over-inflated prices.

daniel, brighton says...
5:03pm Tue 8 Jan 08

Perhaps Mr Daly is simply not recieving the attention he and his painfully contrived tea-shop hoped for. I'm sure if it moved to Whitehawk it would get all the attention it deserves.

Stroller, Hove says...
5:33pm Tue 8 Jan 08

Although I suppose this tea-shop might be marginally preferable to Eddy's gristle emporium, it is far too ostentatious for Hove which prefers good, unaffected manners when it comes to tea drinking rather than all that parvenu behaviour which passes for style on the museli mountain.

Louis, Brighton says...
5:39pm Tue 8 Jan 08

The Argus is usually never slow to lard its prose with puns, so why didn't the report make the point that Mr Daly likes to stir it up?

Wilftop, Hanover says...
5:57pm Tue 8 Jan 08

We DO report the crimes that occour in Hanover, the police couldn't give too hoots. My motorbike has been vandalised numerous times! In 2007 I reported 6 incidents to my bike alone! All which resulted in repairs. (yes it's chained up) we have called the police because of people fighting in the streets. My Husbands car has been damaged by yobs The police don't care and don't want to attend any crimes let alone get back to you with your crime ref number. Don't blame most of us in Hanover. Most of those who live here are familys, elderly couples or professional people who look out for our neighbours & do help each other. It would help if the student population knew how to behave and had some manners (and before you start I am only 28 but was raised to respect others & know how to behave in public, shouting swearing at all times of night and causing criminal damage is not my idea of good manners). I live near the tea shop.

As for our councilors I have yet to get a decent response from one about tackling anti-social behaviour & petty crime in Hanover no matter how low they claim the crime rate is.

Flat Foot Soozie, Brunswick Square says...

I don't think all the Greens in Hanover can be burning the bras. It's hardly ecologically friendly, what with all the elastic bits and pieces giving off the dioxins.

I hear that, in liberating themselves, these women send the discarded garments to Africa.

That might of course seem a bit imperialist of them. Why should the African women be shackled by such a symbol of male domination while the Hanover women get to disport themselves without shame?

But, that's the Greens for you.

Bring on the cliche. Museli Mountain etc. If Mr Daly got involved in the area he would realise that Hanover is a very different area than the one he perceves it to be. It's a great mix of all types of people probably making it one of the most interesting places in Brighton with its own unique character. If he wants bland then go and go soon. If you dont like a mixture of families, single people, students, profesional couples, labourers, oap's, teachers, labourers, sparks, chippy's, minorities of all kinds, trendy's, geeks, chavs, artists, musicians, doctors, bus drivers, unemployed, business men and women, uemployed etc etc etc, then please go and find your utopia somwhere else. By the way your place fitted in perfectly with Hanovers eclectic comunity. Just please drop the cliche's they just dont stick anymore, open your eyes!

I suspect this is all sour grapes on Mr Daly's part, as his business is probably not viable in a residential area. Had the tearooms been open more consistently, offered more savoury food and smaller, cheaper portions than the whole high tea I suspect the tearoom would have been more successful. Not to mention dropping the fastidiousness about table manners and their overtly royalist stance. Attention seeking and PR stunts seem to be more important to the owners than providing a service. Mr Daly's attack on the local community is spiteful, and as someone who has probably been the subject of stereotyping as a gay man, he should really know better.

That part of southover was run down for years, numerous shops tried to open there with no success, then someone comes along and not only gets it self a name in Hanover and Brighton but obtains world recognition and you all knock them. You can bet your life that when they do leave Hanover that part of Southover Street will once again look run down, un-kept and we will loose yet another shop as it will most probably be turned into flats.

the most common sense comment left. If people dont start to stand up to the youth of today soon they will take over and all hell with break loose. Dear Mr Randal

I was surprised to read on the Argus online this evening your comments regarding the stand the two guys at the tearooms on Southover Street are taking on the yobs that are causing havoc in Hanover.

I have had the pleasure of meeting the labour councillor and your fellow green councillor Georgia but have never ever meet you before. I am unsure if you have a personal quibble with the owners of the tearoom but by stating in the newspaper that there is no crime in Hanover is at best naive.

I have lived in Hanover for 6 years and as a whole it is a nice area. However the crime in the area IS out of control and your comments brushing it under the carpet totally disgust me. Maybe where you are there is some special powers at force but living on Newhaven Street is a total nightmare for crime. We have had our car wing mirrors ripped off 9 times, my property has had graffiti on it several times, I am constantly awaken by drunks at 3am, and my neighbours house has been pelted by stones on a number of occasions.

May I suggest that if you actually get out and meet members of the community and talk about the issues you might in future refrain from making such remarks in the newspaper?

I for one am pleased that the guys are standing up for them self’s. They have brought some colour to the area, tidied up that section of Southover Street and highlighted the problem we are having.

It seems to me that local councillor’s just pop their heads up when they can get their names in the paper but the rest of the time do very little.

No, they would all begin to stave and quarrel among themselves. It's what happened in Passport to Pimlico. But it would be a good idea to put barbed wire round Museli Mountain.
We did get the reference Louis there is a Classic Comedy section in Western Road Virgin thanks.

I cannot even call it muesli mountain as a nickname, its as inauthentic, self-referential and contrived and self conscious as the current Hanover (and Brighton) itself.

No one ever called it that when I was a kid, in fact even the word Hanover was seldom used. It was a good laugh drinking down the hill on your way to town (not the city centre newbies) but other than that was just rows of houses that people thought were a bit pokey.

i agree! Brighton is lossing all its character and all its unique characters. What do we want brighton to turn into? A load of chain shops who dont care about the town, take the towns money and not re-invest it into the town or do we want a town full of unique (maybe a little strange) people and shops. I wish them all the luck in the world.

Why don't you bother them about their obviously inaccurate figures and tell them that Brighton is in fact the size of Greater Mexico City and should really be the seat of the UN.

Why dig someone out so pointlessly? Why does it bother you that someone points out the obvious idiocy of claiming Brighton is a large city? OK lets all join in. I say Rottingdean is a throbbing multicultural urban centre in desperate need of its own underground and Ditchling is hosting a summit on its increased urbanisation in the 21st century with fellow major growth centres like Shanghai and Manila. lalalala.

If Mr Daly had been so intent on setting up such a business, and desirous of making a reasonable profit from it, he must have explored the area and judged it suitable for his ultra-Royalist ambience with no nose-picking allowed near the sugar bowl.

His researches must have been skimpy as he has not been there very long, and the neighbourhood cannot have changed so drastically in that time for him to explode in this way - which itself hardly fits with his "image" of good manners.

Had he looked up at the chimneys earlier, he would have detected any signs of the bra burning, and so given the place a wide berth (not to be confused with a wide birthing pool, which every self-respecting Hanover house has waiting in the shed)

I should not be surprised if in fact the novelty of Mr Daly's tea shoppe has worn off and all his blarney is a last hurrah before he grits his teeth and turns the place into one where there is hummus and vegeburgers at every turn, and pictures of Her Majesty are replaced with those of commisar Bill Randall.

Reading the centre pages of The Argus to today, I noticed an article about this chappie who owns a tearoom. I chuckled when I got down to the bit that said 'The quaint shop made headlines across the globe after it emerged its owners had banned elbows on tables, mobile phones, slurping, handling sugar cubes and clattering of teaspoons'.
My eyes were then drawn to the picture of said chappie, sitting at a table, cup in hand, WITH ONE OF HIS ELBOWS ON THE TABLE. Three words spring to mind... kettle, black and pot.

I was surprissed to read todays argus about the crime in hanover and all the Hanover residents who said its such a wonderful area with no crime! WHAT ARE YOU ALL TALKING ABOUT? we have a big problem in hanover with yobs running a mock. Over the years this area has gone down hill more and more and by just pretending we dont have a problem you are personaly making the problem worse. I live just off the top of southover street. Last night i had students smashing bottles at 4am, 2 weks ago my car was keyed so it this is no crime i dont know what is. Mr daly im glad you stand up for your self becouse no one else round here does. Spineless

I stopped going to this tea shop because David Daly was so incredibly spiteful about his neighbours and even his customers. He told me he was going to get the doors narrowed to keep fat people out - I wonder if that will be in his etiquette book?

He made enemies as soon as he arrived, but no-one deserves rocks through their window, or to be abused for being disabled, and there certainly seems to be more anti-social behaviour recently in a few streets.

Hanover is a big smug and Mr Daly's comment about people being too busy doing yoga to care, has some truth in it.

why dont the people of brighton just say well done to these two for standing up to yobs instead of mocking them. Im sure you would all be talking in a very different tone if it was your windows being smashed or you being terrorised? This is how communitys fall apart. when no one cares. If no one cares nobody paints off graffiti, nobody repairs smashed windows, nobody picks up that bit of litter in the street and before we know it we are living like birmingham. i really can not belive the mentality of some people? what did you want them to do? Sit back and take it. They are an inspiration to the people of brighton and hove and if it makes people start to tackle the youths it might make what is currently a very dangerous town into a better place. i will be visitng the tea shop with weekend to show my support! well done!!!!
