A MAN was stabbed to death in a savage attack in Wood Green last week.

Jonathan McMurray, 20, of Russell Avenue, Wood Green, was fatally wounded after being involved in an argument as he walked home late at night.

Mr McMurray, who is believed to have been of mixed race, had been at the JD Wetherspoon's pub in High Road, Wood Green, which he left with friends at closing time last Wednesday evening.

His journey home took him through Gladstone Avenue where he was confronted by a large group of people. Police believe that there was a clash between the two groups, during which Mr McMurray was stabbed.

Ambulance crews and police rushed to the scene after being called at 11.40pm. Mr McMurray was taken to the North Middlesex Hospital, where he died at 1.30am last Thursday.

A postmortem at Hornsey Mortuary later that day confirmed the cause of death as a single stab wound. An inquest into the death was due to start at Hornsey Coroner's Court yesterday.

A police spokeswoman said: "We are keeping an open mind on the motive at this stage, and we are appealing for witnesses and information on the murder."

An incident room has been opened at Barking police station. The investigation is being led by DI David Gill of the Serious Crime Group. If you have any information, contact DI Gill on 8345 3865 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Two youths, aged 16 and 17, have been arrested in connection with the murder. They have been bailed to return to a north London police station in August, pending police inquiries.s=10A MAN was stabbed to death in a savage attack in Wood Green last week.o
