Probe as schoolgirls turn air blue with internet video

Girls at a £20,000 a year boarding school are under investigation for turning the air blue in an explicit classroom video posted on the internet.

The pupils, thought to be aged in their young teens, reel off a string of vulgar slang words and insult a female teacher who is not present.

One of the girls at the exclusive Burgess Hill School for Girls grins as she uses the teacher's name to refer to her private parts.

They then brag about posting the footage on the internet.

The video, entitled 'Life in the Classroom', also has the tagline 'This is life at break... Burgess Hill school break slutty girl play.' It is now in the hands of teachers after it was spotted on file-sharing website YouTube.

The school last night launched an investigation and alerted the girls' parents.

Ann Aughwane, headteacher, said: "We have sanctioned an investigation and are speaking to the girls' parents.

"This is a serious incident but the girls are really only guilty of immature nonsense. Their biggest error is a lack of judgement in posting this video onto the internet.

"The school regrets very much the implication that its reputation could be damaged as a result."

The 675-pupil independent school is the top-performing school in West Sussex with a 100 per cent pass rate in GCSE exams last year.

Parents pay up to £19,785 a year to send their daughters aged between two and 18 to the school in Keymer Road.

Mrs Aughwane said the video was shot at the end of the Christmas term when "spirits were high".

She added: "We have a policy of educating rather than banning when it comes to the internet and social networking websites.

"I now have some young girls who are fully aware of the dangers of these websites. "They are absolutely horrified at the thought their actions could have damaged the school.

"We are very disappointed in them and their behaviour has been wholly inappropriate. Any punishment will be decided in due course of the investigation."

The school, which stands in a 14-acre estate close to the centre of Burgess Hill, has established itself as a centre of excellence in music, sport, art and drama.

As well as boarding girls, day pupils are ferried in by coach from Lewes, Newick, Henfield, Worthing, Crawley, East Grinstead and Hove.

The footage posted on YouTube is not the first to have led to recriminations for school pupils.

In October last year an entire class of 16 and 17-year-olds were suspended from Central Sussex College, in Crawley, after they filmed themselves bullying a teacher and posted footage on YouTube.

Earlier that year, a clip showing teenagers from the college attempting martial arts moves on each other also appeared on the site.

Who actually bothers to trawl that website for these videos? If these kids want to make childish immature videos which no one would watch anyway then let them.

No, any company/school keen on what is being said about it on the web, just needs to set up a Google Alert - then google will e-mail you when it finds something new

i know a head teacher, who pretended to be a pupil on my space, so he could get a child expelled, when she said something that she did that was against school rules. yes these girls were wrong but, they are still girls, and will make mistakes, teachers posing as pupils is just too 1984

When i was at The Triangle leisure centre in BH the other day, the school bus parked up in the disabled bays out the front of the centre. and the girls alighted. None of them appeared to be disabled.

Perhaps its the teachers or the mini bus driver that need a lesson in ettique.

I shouldn't be surprised if an undercover video of the Staff Room revealed all manner of outrageous language - and less than subtle flirtation as a preamble to a quickie in the stationery cupboard.

Ok, so there was a little bit of an indiscretion on the girls' part- is it really major news? It goes on at every school, the fact that it is a private school is irrelevant. I can't believe it's even considered major news by The Sun now- supposedly as important as the Bhutto murder. Ridiculous.

This is stupid... I go to that school and I am shocked that this happened.
They have made it worse than it is, just because it is a private school and they are jealous. They have even cancelled our non school uniform day because of this! I haven't even seen the video, but it doens't matter!

I am sorry to hear that you non-uniform day has been cancelled. Your school shouldn't be punishing the innocent ones.

The media have made a big deal out of this as its rare to be able to take a swipe at a private school.

In fairness, all the video really did was show that not all privately educated girls are toffee-nosed!

You state you've not seen the video, that's what your headmistress would have been hoping, therefore you will not be aware that she has lied when she said no explicit language has been used. 'Fanjita' may not be, but 'P*ss Flaps' certainly is.

To set this straight, no, teachers were not "spying" on You Tube videos at all. The video was trawled by an unscrupulous local website owner who chose to not only paste it but to add further humiliation with unnecessary and unjustifiable comments about their education. Who should we REALLY be condemning here? The children who made a foolish and naive mistake or the adult (NOT a teacher) who actively used those children for his own warped self glorification?

Burgess Hill Uncovered - a few hundred visitors. The Argus and The Sun have thousands. Who's humiliating the school more? There's no contest.

If we let these toffee nosed, little scrubbers get away with calling teachers "P*ss Flaps" at the tender age of 12, what will they be like at 16? 18? 21? They need to be taught a lesson, and for £20k you would have thought they would already have recieved some of them. What do they get up to in schools these days? They should be out in the playground playing kiss chase (I am aware its an all girls school, but in the future I will be a dirty old man) or learning times tables. Pathetic.

Some things in this are exaggerated, like the fact that you only pay £19,785 a year if you are a full time boarder, and some people commented that they were swearing, but they didn't swear, just used slang word, and they did cancel our non-uniform day, not as a punishment, but because of how the media has taken the story and made it seem like some really big thing, and they don't want any more bad press about the school. It's a shame because everyone might think that it's a really bad school now, which it isn't, because of a few girls who didn't think it would be such a big deal.

Find Better News Stories, The universe says...

I agree with the other girls from my school. This story has been completely blown out of proportion by the press, and the reason our non uniform day has been cancelled is because of the way the press would take it. No one pays 20k to go to our school - not even the boarders pay that much. Our school doesn't deserve to be looked down on because of the silly mistakes of younger girls. If this kind of video had come from a state school, it wouldn't be in the newspapers. Why should it be different because we pay to go to school? We're still people, the same as everyone else. This story shouldn't be in the headlines - is there really nothing better to write about? The girls that made the video made a mistake, and obviously won't do it again. There's nothing more to be said about the subject - it's just going over what's already been said.
