A young man has died and three people remain in hospital after a horror crash in Whitehawk.

A police patrol car saw a Mazda containing three men and two women, believed to be teenagers, being driven erratically in Bevendean, Brighton, at 1am on Saturday and signalled it to stop.

The driver did not respond and following a pursuit crashed into a brick wall in Wilson Avenue, Brighton, and careered through two gardens.

One of the men has died and another remains in a critical condition. All five were taken to the Royal Sussex County hospital, where one has since been discharged.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission(IPCC) has launched an independent investigation into the crash and has deployed two investigators to the scene.

IPCC commissioner Tom Davies said: "My condolences go to the family and friends of the dead man.

"This must have been a traumatic incident for everybody involved, including the members of the emergency services who attended.

"The IPCC investigation will be independent and proportionate."

Sussex Police has arrested the driver of the car.

Formal identification has not yet taken place.

Nice one Anna, let the criminals rule the streets. Are you a complete idiot? When someone makes the decision to drive off from police they take responsibility for their life and of those inside the car. The driver has to live with killing his mate. The whole disaster is his fault.

So Anna, you are quiet happy for an uninsured driver in a stolen car with out a license to drive down your roads / streets / around the marina at speed or erratically and possibly hit people. If you are willing to take that risk you are one in a million I think.

If these people have broken the law they deserved to be stopped and punished for there crimes. This is an unfortunate accident which I am sorry to read about but if the driver had stopped when requested this wouldn't have happened.

Just as a matter of point most illegal drugs and firearms are transported in stolen vehicles are you happy to let this movement go about unabeited?

If it's a passenger that has died I think the driver of the mazda should be done for manslaughter.

First of all it is a tragedy. That said'Anna' what a ridiculous thing to say. If police can't stop cars then there would be complete anarchy. What is the answer? Easy to say don't chase but the police do not know whay that car contains...if you don't let the police to stop cars more will get stolen, more will die and more criminals will transport stolen goods, drugs etc with complete confidence. I am NOT saying that is the case here but thgink about it before you make what you think is a politically correct comment.

Or alternatively, when will folks like these realise that doing a runner from the plod when they want a word isn't worth a life either?

Would you still hold your view if the people in the car had (for example) burgled your gaff or done over a close relative?

Tony Wares, Brighton says...

Of course my sympathy stays with the family's of those involved, however, the driver made a contious choice, to speed, drive dangerously AND ultematly not to stop for the persuing officers.

I hope this gives a stark reminder to everyone that running is not the best ploicy, as it lands you in the face of trouble evan further.

None of us were angels when we were young, but the differance is, most of us know right from wrong. I commend the police in what they do. You also have to remember that police persuit drivers are highly trained!! Criminals that drive off at speeds often have very little (if any) driver training.
If one thing is learnt from this, it's that young people realise that they are no longer invincible any longer and WILL end up paying for thier actions, weither it be by criminal convictions or with their lives.

A thanks to all invloved in the persuit and aftermath for keeping our country safe! WELL DONE!!

My thoughts are with the families of those people involved in the crash. If it is confirmed that they are from Whitehawk I am sure that the strong local community there will want to focus on supporting those families as they deal with what has happened. The Independent Police Complaints Commission are investigating what took place and everyone should await the outcome of that investigation before giving any further reaction.

At the end of the day the person who will have to brunt the biggest pain of all will be the driver of this sad and tragic accident. Yes I am afraid the police were right and I am sure that even the local residents would want this. But at the end of it some poor your man has lost his life and for what. May he rest in peace and lets not all get emotional about society which is easy to do and lets show our respects to the mans family who will now have a huge weight of sorrow.

I also feel for the police chasing as I know this will probably not be good for the relationship of the police and the estate but they were simply doing their job as if a car fails to stop then they have no choice but to pursue it.

Anyhow my sympathy goes out to ALL concerned as it cant be asy for anyone involved in dealing with it and thoughts are with you. God bless.

If Anna did know the person that died,I feel she would say. Until the facts are known, it's very unfair to comment why the driver did'nt stop.I agree that the police are only doing their job, the driver should of stopped. The person who was driving, will have to live with this for the rest of his life. Lets also remember a young person has died,a family in pieces. Maybe there should be a police campain, stop and be question.Better than carrying on, and someone tragically losing their life.As society will keep on having incidents like this.

If the police signal for you to stop you have a choice. I believe that 99% of people would pull over. Those that choose to bolt(why would you unless you had something to hide?) make that choice, it is not forced on them by anyone other than themselves. Often, as in this case, the price they pay is ruined lives..

Obviously my condolances go out to the families of those involved and my best wishes to those passengers still in hospital. My thoughts also go out to those officers involved. They will be feeling guilty as hell and made to feel like criminals themselves with the investigation when they were just doing their jobs. The person who should be held accountable is the driver. For his part, I hope he can live with the guilt but he must also receive a harsh sentance. I only hope this tragedy serves as a lesson to others who may steal cars, drink and drive, drive without a license or insurance or even just make off from police for the fun of it. All too often these incidents end with a loss of life.

Sorry Jade but the message board is for people who want to make comments about what happened and not a board for you to start a campaign where you are all grieving (or in your case, whining) for the loss of a loved one.

Some posts have acknowledged that the person that died was known and that the driver should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. I totally agree. The driver had no thought for his passengers at all did he? He probably thought he would look "cool" in front of the other idiots who got into the car with him. Selfish is what I would call that person. The driver thought that much about his/her passengers that he/she decided to run away from the wreck. How thoughtful of him/her. Obviously a caring, sensitive person......NOT

What about the poor officers who were following the vehicle before it crashed? They will have to live with the sight of the carnage caused by an idiot driver who thought it would be great fun to have a police car chasing them. The driver HAD the option to stop but failed to do so. Who is the sensible one here? And now every single action and word will be scrutinised by the IPCC and no doubt the Police will get slated for chasing a car and causing a death which is so wrong! The DRIVER of the car that failed to stop is the one that should be investigated and scutinised NOT the Police Officers who were trying to enforce the law.

But it will happen again. Some young idiot will think it's great to have the Police chase them so they can brag about it afterwards.

Will the driver of this crash be a hero to you Jade???

Angie, Brighton says...

I have read all the comments and firstly I have to say that all I feel is sadness for all the pain that all the families are going to have to go through now. I will be thinking of you all and I send you my love. I am also concerned that people are making assumptions about what actually happened and I'd like to say that sometimes even nice people make mistakes. Lastly the driver of the car probably has a family too who love him. It is an assumption of mine but it appears that five young people were in a car as friends and they all had that choice of being in that car, please don't blame one person. Take care.

Roger, Hove says...

The Driver will have to live with this for the rest of their life but I doubt very much they will suffer for too long. Those klnd never do.

Until idiots like this learn the Police will continue to try and keep them within the law, although I doubt the driver really thought about that.

No Lorraine, a 17 year-old male losing his life is the penaultimate line. The bottom line is, and ALWAYS WILL be in this case, is that some young person decided to try and outrun the Police. If he/she had NOT decided upon that course of action, then the 17 year-old boy (Matt ?) would NOT, repeat NOT, have been killed.

That is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. No-one can hide from that.

Let it be a lesson to all the stupid idiots that think they can get away with stealing cars, reckless driving, poss no insurance, road tax, and seat belts. But why do they want to take mates with them, bet they were all having a good laugh at the police who were trying to stop them. Those poor buggers are doing a job, it could have been them, no, they are the ones left to pick up the pieces from these stupid idiots. I blame the parents of the driver. Did they not bring him up to respect the police and the law? Probably not. He thought he was above it, a better driver than the police officer, wanted to show off to his mates. Oh well, looks like he was wrong and his mate paid the price and so will his family, thoughts are with them. I wish people would stop trying to blame others, the people in the car chose to be in it. If they were all such good friends, they would have known the driver would have failed to stop for police. They made the choice, they have to take the responsiblity for their actions. Look -- one thing is pretty certain: it was the driver's fault that Matt died, whoever he was. If Matt or the others in the car knew that the driver had been drinking or knew that they shouldn't have been in that car at the time, they've got to share some of the blame. For all that, nobody deserved to die. That said, the result is entirely the fault of the driver and I hope he gets what is coming to him, whether the justice dispensed comes from the courts or from Matt's friends and relatives.

Fault? It's the fault of the people who find excuses for drivers who do these things and it's the fault of their friends who go along with them when they do it.

I like to apologise for most of us to the family and friends of Matt. I had no idea who he was but clearly he was liked and loved by those close to him. No, this is not reserved for tributes to the lad but there's something else going on here. If nothing else, what is showing is a general revulsion for the mindsets of drivers whose behaviour leads to the death of people like Matt. Unfortunately, the thoroughly-deserved contempt that he attracts is being spread indiscriminately and Matt is copping far more than he deserves. Leave the lad alone and let his family grieve. And for god's sake, this is hardly the place for cheap -- really cheap -- jokes about English language usage.
On the other hand perhaps those friends and family of Matt might, in due course, turn their anger on those wastes of space who cause tragedies like this in the first place. They really are a waste of space and society would be far better off without them.

those that are getting personal are right out of order, but please let us make our point. it was a stupid thing to do, but now maybe it is time to put this to bed and let these families have their time alone. im sure that the police will reveal the findings of the ipcc in due course. once again im very sorry someone had to lose a life like this, so come on, THINK BEFORE YOU DRINK BEFORE YOU DRIVE

I dont understand why people are here to argue. A life has been lost and people would rather annoy whitehawkers than show theyre respects. And also as for those who are saying "its all the drivers fault" i believe that you couldnt be any further from the truth, every one involved in the car when it crashed chose to be there, its not like the driver held them hostage! its not all HIS fault, i believe that if any one is at fault then it is all the involved. also people who are here to whine and try to get one over on whitehawkers should just not bother to post comments because it shows that you have NO life if you have the time to say rubbish about people you do not know just to see there reactions

Sorry Anna, but if the police didn't persue, all anyone would need to do when signalled by the police to stop, would be to speed off. This would lead to more car theft and joyriding. If they had pulled over as requested, this would never have happened. It's tragic, but it was the driver's fault, not the police.

First of all, it's sad that two young people have lost their life. Irrespective of where they live, it is two lives lost that could have gone on to do good. None of us can say that is not the case as we can't see the future.

I would though like to challenge the perception that the driver made 'a mistake'. His actions weren't a mistake. They stopped being a mistake when he willful drove away from the police. At that point it was a willful act, not an error of judgment as he knew exactly what he was doing and why.

No he didn't show any respect to his friends. I would hope they would have been encouraging him to stop. If they were, they are innocents caught up in something. If they were encouraging him, then they will have helped caused the problem.

Police are always told that in a chase situation that if they think there is a danger of an accident that they should pull back (different from giving up).

No one wins from a situation like this. The only hope is that those involved in the incident, or their friends will encourage others not to do the same. However given the youths I've worked with in the past, this is only likely to happen for a short time.)

I only knew Matt briefly, he worked for me for a while last year. He was a good lad, no angel but who among you is? I found a quality in him that is so rare in kids his age. Whatever he was up to last night I doubt very much that he deserved to die for it. Im saddened to read of another young life being taken in such tragic circumstances, no one can fully comprehend what this young man's family are going through unless they have been through it themselves, which i firmly believe most people here have never been through and i hope never will have to go through the hurt and pain of a situation like this. so please remember to have respect for the family, as at this sad time they are in more need of support. rather than being part of the critisism of our law as it stands today, the rights and wrongs of it dont belong in here but in the courtrooms where educated people can make a farce of the law, without the help of public opinion. right now there are 100s of people affected by what has happened! from the kids in the car to the parents, family and the friends, even the officers involved who were after all doing there job and who will today be second guessing everything they did at the time to see if there was anything they could have done diffrent that could have saved this young mans life, right through to all those that attended the scene ambulance fire, police even to the doctors and nurses who have had to deal with the after affects of it all, to all these people i can only say thanks for being there and doing the best that they can in a bad situation, to everyone else i say be grateful its not your child! but sit back and ask yourself do you honestly know where your child is when they go out. to all the kids reading this, It takes a bigger person to defend whats right than to glorify whats wrong. the next time it could be you in the wrong place at the wrong time, so think big, but be smart not stupid, you only get 1 bite at this apple they call life.

I work alongside (not With) the Police, and I was working Last Night. I saw the 20 Police taken off the most dangerous street in Brighton to go and deal with this incident. My Condolences go out to the families of the victims, but also to those who have to pick up the pieces. I lost 2 family members due to drink driving, they were innocent victims, and it left 2 little girls orphans... The Police do an amazing job, for reasonable money..but every day a Police Officer goes to work, it could be their last day.. no other job is like that.. I've known Police Officers I call friends that have been stabbed, strangled, been in situations where they could have died.. and it was due to idiots that they were there.. I am happy to pay for the Police, and proud to say they do a fantastic job.. and to those of you who think it was the Police's fault that Matt died..no it wasn't.. it was the Police's JOB to ensure that idiots who break the law get what they deserve.. but knowing the ridiculous Judges we have, the driver will probably get an 18 month ban (for a license he doesn't have) and if he's REALLY unlucky he might get 6 months inside... But will he stop?? No, I really don't think he will..

Everyone has their right to voice their opinion in whatever way they see fit, unfortunately although i do think it is too early to be making some of the comments i have seen here. I do think there is clearly a lot of anger towards the driver, who can be called nothing less than selfish. A number of factors do need to be considered here, ok the other passengers including the lad who sadly died were in the car and agreed to get in, however when the police signalled to stop did they then have any choice but to stay in the vehicle? Unfortunately the person who deserves to pay heavily for this (the driver) will probably get a menial sentence and most likely knew that when he failed to stop, there is no real deterrant for these kind of crimes and these young people know these kind of details nowadays. My sincere condolances go out to the family at what will be a difficult time, however we do need to have some perspective here and acknowledge that these young people chose to enter that vehicle knowing the risks, unfortunately the lad who died is paying the highest price of all, with his life. Nobody deserves to die in this way and i do think that although correct in some of what they say some of the people who have posted on here, baiting what appears to be upset family and friends is totally unnecessary. Some of you seem to intimate through your superior spelling and grammar that you are above these people, yet through your choice of words you show yourselves up. Im all for freedom of speech and agree with some of what you say, but putting people down because they cant write or spell aswel as you is irrelevant and unnecessary. Phoebe/Izzy,

May I politely suggest that you check your fact about police procedure in chases. If there is ever the thought that the driving being displayed by someone 'running' from the police that would 'endanger others or themselves' then the police pull back to a 'safer distance'. Now the IPCC will investigate what happened and determine whether or not this happened, but please don't suggest that the fault of the accident should be laid at the hands of the police.

Hmm.. (Please dont comment back saying \" Ohh i wouldn\'t put myself in that position\" because i said IMAGINE). You say that it doesn\'t matter where he\'s from, so why even say it in the first place?,you dont live in Whitehawk and dont know about the neighbourhood, so your not one to judge whether they are \"Whitehawk scumbags\" or not.
“so many accidents are caused by police moving too fast in on cars, therefore there is more possibility of the car crashing.”
Not sure what that on Earth means. There are no statistics in Brighton to prove that, in fact I think recent news coverage of police getting more driving training suggest the opposite. Silly coment really. Police are highly trained at driving fast, some random kid probably isn’t as well trained, and needs to be stopped. Are you trying to suggest police don’t peruse cars that fail to stop that could have burglars in, drug dealers, child kidnappers, drunk drivers etc? What on earth next?

The only person to blame in this situation is the driver of the car. If the police signal for you to stop, you stop. Theres no way the police can by blamed for following cars that dont't stop. Otherwise, rob a bank, shoot someone and then jump in a motor and you're home free. Perhaps now we should have a policy that if you fail to stop for the police the driver is shot. At least that way the only person who is killed/injured has a choise!

It amazes me that some people see fit to write such awful comments when so many are clearly suffering. The loss of a life so young is no laughing matter, no matter how it was brought about. Those of you who sit behind your PC screens using false names and openly debate the fact that some of the contributors here cannot spell or due to economic restraint have to live in a certain part of town, are, frankly, despicable. You really show the human race at it's lowest. To die prematurely is awful. To stand over the deceased and laugh at their misfortune is nothing short of evil. If you must make your ill placed comments then at least have the balls to write your full (real) name so you can be identified. I hope your karma treats you well.

I can't believe a comment like this! While I feel sorry for the dead lad's family, They all made the choice to get in a stolen car. Why should the police back off from these scumbags, that take things that honest, decent people work hard for! If a kid of say 15 -20 doesn't know right from wrong then the parents only have themselves to blame! That is what is so wrong with this country, turning into a soft option for all the criminals and scumbags! Should bring back the birch and national service. Yes when i was a kid i knew going nicking apples was wrong, i got caught, clipped round the ear by the copper and belt by dad when the copper took me home, I never did it again! Nowadays they give them a bloody wii or ps3 or say they have adhd! As for all those on here saying someone has lost a life and people shouldn't leave comments on here etc. wanna think, they properly know the driver of the car as well, will they go give him a hug when he gets bail or blame him for the death? chances are it will be the 1st and he's the culprit as without his choice and actions, this wouldn't of happened! After all this is a public forum for comments and debate, 1 of the last things we can do is this once great country isn't it? With freedom of speech, although that is slowly being taken away as well!

Firstly my condolences to everyone involved, I can only imagine how awful this is for you all.

"Yes, he was driving the car and caused it to crash, but who was to know a horrible accident would happen?. "
Are you ACTUALLY serious? Without wishing to sound nasty, the driver should have realised that when he was being chased by the police he should have stopped. He clearly is some sort of idiot, not caring about his friends or anyone around him. His reckless driving caused the accident, if he wasn't such a f**kwit it wouldn't have happened. Simple really.
I can't stand anyone defending people who drive like that. They ARE scum and they SHOULD be off of our streets.

Secondly, the Argus website isn't necessairily the place to air your condolences. I would have thought it would have been better to do it elsewhere. This is an open debate and even idiots can join in, so I'd stop reading it if I was as easily offended as you.
While I completely sympathise with the families and emergency services involved, this comes down to one person and one person only and I hope he gets locked away for a LONG time.

There should be a bit more concern for the people who were rudely awakened at that time of the morning. They are innocent in all this. Stop blaming the police, and take responsibility for your own actions. The world doesnt owe you a living.

That's because there is nothing wrong with being gay so why would anyone bang on about that? being gay isnt a crime. Do you live in the ghetto in New York? Perhaps you should have paid more attention at school and learned to write properly.
The reason we have laws is to protect the law abiding citizen from the criminal. Driving a car under age with no insurance is a criminal offence. If the police tell you to stop, that's what you should do. The driver of this car clearly had absolutely no regard for the law, his passengers or anyone else. Now someone is dead.
I hope he goes to prison for a very long time, and I hope his stupid actions haunt him for the rest of his life.
Also I think you are wrong on one fact. As far as I know the driver's mother bought the car for him even though he was more than a year too young to drive it on the road. What does that tell you?

I have read the story over the last few days.
May i express my condolences to Matt's family first as i wish that no-one to be killed or hurt. I never knew any of these people involved in this sad story but have to comment on a few points.
Its easy to say that "Yeah, they are all loveable rogues, heart of gold , etc, etc." but you are missing the point. ALL of them decided that they were going in the car, ALL of them knew the drivers age and state (alcohol levels) and whether he had insurance, license that no-one has at the age of 15. I understand Hilal jumped out. Even if the crash didnt happen that was the BEST decision that kid has ever made. Not only due to what happened, but a simple question of whats right and what is wrong. The others carried on regardless breaking more laws that are in place for us drivers. By being thoughtless minded and showing disregard and disrespect for laws, they carried on putting all over road users and pedestrians at risk of injury. Yes a tragedy has happened and i think they might learn thier lessons but only if they get punished, as this was not only the drivers thought to speed off. A 90% completed rate on need for speed on the ps2 and alcohol, along with a pinch of peer pressure seems to be a reciepe for destruction.Yes there have been a death and injuries (get well soon Simon) and this could of been easily avoided if these youngsters showed some lack of respect for laws for these "heart of gold, loveable rogues!"
As for the 'nxt txt genar8ion', please learn to spell and write something constructive as all your remarks are laden with ill fitted insults. Your remarks to your friend seem very disrespectful in a book of condolences and i understand your getting grief for a few individuals on here but all your remarks are truly not acceptable. This whole matter is not a 'Whitehawk thing', not a 'spelling test', not about 'shallow, dramatic outbursts of grief',not a matter of 'police did wrong' and not a matter of 'mistakes' as some of the previous comments suggest.
It is simply a matter of personal responsibility.

All involved had a degree of responsibility and each should be prepared to acknowledge and accept the truth of the part they played.

Each person getting in the car had responsibility for their own safety, knowing what risks they were placing themselves in. Did they know the age of the driver, did they know the experience of the driver, did they know the sobriety of the driver? If not.... why not. The only excuse can be ignorance of the dangers, but these people were all old enough to recognise danger, and be allowed to be unaccompanied in public late at night.

The driver of the car. That person had responsibilty to take steps to protect the safety of passengers, other road users and use the vehicle in a way that did not cause harm to any other person or their property. As a member of society they also had a responsibility to abide by the laws of the country (even the ones they did not like). Did the person driving the car in this instance Do any of these things?

As for the police driver, that person had a responsibility for the protection of the public (including the occupants of the car) and allowing the courts to uphold the law of the nation. They do not uphold it themselves, merely present the facts to the Courts who are then in a position to decide on culpability and sentance. Once the situation began to unfold and suspicions were roused, then the officer would have been failing on all counts until they established exactly what the situation was regarding the vehicle and all the occupants. In this instance they pursued the vehicle in order to meet their responsibility. They did nothing exceeding their responsibility in doing so and did so in a manner complying with all the current proceedures and laws governing the subject.

The people with developmental responsibility for all those involved had a responsibility to educate their charges with an understanding of what is right and what is wrong, an ability to assess the risks involved in activities they undertake and a recognition responsibility to society and to show respect for others and to others.

People with developmental responsibility are not just parents, it is all those who are in a position to personally influence the behaviour and attitude of the individual. How many close 'friends' and family knew that a person under 17 had access to driving a car on a road? What did they do about it?

The one thing that should stand out from the above is the constant use of the Phrase PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY. Until we all realise that the time has passed for this society to allow each other to make excuses in a feeble attempt to avoid the cold truth, then these situations will continue with more and more regularity. I am sad for those people who have lost a person close to them, or had to pick up the pieces with those that survived the whole experience. The only positive that can come out of this is for all those people to be agents for change and get this society back on a balance where criminality and anti social behaviour is no longer acceptable, until someone dies!!

i was matthew's ex and a good mate of his. he was a lovely guy, no angel but everyone makes mistakes and the driver of that car was a friend of mine too and i know he didn't go out of his way to kill his best mate and leave another of his mates in intensive care. he isn't to blame they all knew what they were doing when they stepped in the car u can't change the past but blaming people isn't gonna help, don't u think his got anough to deal with and his sisters are best friends of mine and they are going through hell at the moment. so please think of people that know him and have to read this they don't want to hear they're mates getting blamed for a tragic accident. rest in peace matthew... gone but not forgotten. 11.1.91 - 9.2.08 xx

Did the vehicle crash because of bad weather, severe road conditions, avoiding another vehicle or person?? THAT would be an ACCIDENT. Driving at an excessive speed, recklessly without consideration of the consequences is not an ACCIDENT it is a deliberate action, which in this instance has cost human life.
Why are the terms 'accident' and 'mistake' being used to avoid the truth that the blame for the crash lay squarely at the feet of the driver. I make no apology for using the word blame in this entry, although previously I called it personal responsibility. It is a shame that others are so ready to make excuses and try to minimise what this person has done. Any 'good friends' and family will have expressed their condolences in person to those concerned. If I have said anything that is not true then my entries will be removed.

Bottom Line. tragedy but completely avoidable. No one has to run from the police, people do because they either think its big and clever or because they don't want to face the consequence of their own actions. Either way it can end in this way which no one wants

I still dont quite understand what you people dont get. MATT wasnt the one driving the car. So MATT wasnt responsable for his death. Why dont you get this? Please i am not starting another debate. I simply do not understand why people cant take in that MATT wasnt the 'selfish, stupid, idiot, or whatever else you've called him' that was driving. MATT was not in controll of the driver. MATT made the decision to enter that car yes. But MATT didnt run from the law, The driver did. R.I.P Matt. xx
