Graffiti artist admits 60 tagging offences

One of Sussex's most prolific graffiti taggers has been spared a prison sentence after admitting more than 60 criminal damage offences.

Jack Deeks, 21, of Hampden Road, Brighton, received a two-month suspended prison sentence, was ordered to complete 250 hours unpaid work and to pay £2,598 costs when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates' Court.

Unemployed Deeks admitted seven counts of criminal damage and one of resisting arrest as he ran from police when he was initially detained.

He also admitted a further 55 offences of criminal damage which were taken into consideration.

The court heard how Deeks, whose tag is NOSH and who is a member of a graffiti crew called DWP - Delinquents with Paint - was arrested by police in the early hours of November 2 last year.

The police contacted Brighton and Hove City Council's graffiti officer who keeps a detailed database of graffiti in the city. She had photographic evidence of more than 60 of Deeks' tags.

More than £3,000 worth of damage has been caused on public and private property including walls, phone boxes and even transit vans by the graffiti.

After the hearing, PC Rebecca Temple said: "I hope the result sends out a strong message to other taggers in the city.

"It appears Deeks simply became caught up in the culture of being a graffiti artist. Unfortunately he did not think through the consequences of his tagging walls and buildings across the city or the cost implications of repairing the damage."

Environment councillor Geoffrey Theobald added: "This is a good example of how, by working with the police, we can tackle environmental crime, track down offenders and bring those responsible for spoiling our city before the courts." The council has recently faced a £14,000 bill to clean up Tarner Park, which was opened up for graffiti artists but surroundings were spray painted.

What do you think should be done to deter graffiti? Tell us below.

I have seen the decline of this great town in recent years and most of it is down to graffiti. Who cares about overcrowded prison population? i say we lock up all these young "talented" men who paint on walls ASAP. and i hope they rot in hell.

As mentioned before (if you'd bothered to read this thread before passing comment), Jack is employed and not on benefits.

How exactly do you equate a violent attack on your'hippy' partner, with a kid spraying walls as a form of artistic expression?

It looks like comments are vanishing for some reason, so I'll reiterate. Why doesn't he restrict his 'artistic output' to his own property. Then his 'friends' could enjoy it and it wouldn't blight the rest of us.

i'll try again (this time without insulting the argus' precious londoner demographic).

i've known Jack since he was a kid. i've always found him to be a well grounded individual with an intense passion for the things he loves, which include hip hop culture.

this culture has been shaping the world we live in (like it or not) for 30 years, with an impact far wider than rock & roll or any other form of popular culture. you just might not know it.

grafitti isn't done by the intimidating 'hoodies' standing around, drinking and looking for a fight.

these kids are creative intelligent and motivated and of course they are going to be drawn to the coolest street culture of the day.

i would not expect everyone to 'get it' but FFS our grandparents were getting freaked out when people started wearing leather jackets and riding motorbikes in the 50's. same s***, different time.

If it includes the vandalism we know as grafitti then it's a negative impact - you can hardly say it's improved all our lives, can you?

I, like Jack Deeks, fell into the deadly game of graffiti at a young age. At first is was just a couple of scribbles on a friend's wall. This soon degenerated into "tags" on people's shops and transport. I even scratched shop windows for which I am deeply ashamed. The problem got so bad that I started to hold disrespectful thoughts towards authority figures and I even questioned the Argus's intelligent and unbiased journalism.

Luckily, I was arrested by our fine police force before it was too late. The court were not leniant with me- why should they have been? I recklessly destroyed other people's property. After my arrest and subsequent trial, I suddenly realised overnight that this "hobby" is a blight on our society. Google "the broken window theory" - it changed my life. I hope Jack Deeks learns the error of his ways. It's time this bozo grew up (as well as stop biting my ****). Next time use paper and pens, not ignorance and hate.

wow, reading this really gets my goat.

graffiti, once again islinked to the "social evils" which seem to prevail in our soicety, by people who really dont know what they are talking about.

before i get all worked up, i just want to say a few points.

1) opinions are like a$£*holes - everyone has one. you might not think graffiti is art, but who are you to judge what "art" is? i personally dont see how damien hurst' chopped in half cow, or tracy emins unmade bed is "art" but it seems that the middle class part of our society does.

you may not like "tags" but a lot of people do. you just dont know them.

2) people advocating 10 year sentences for the simple (when you sit down and think about it) act of PLACING PAINT ONTO A WALL. what goes through these peoples minds? seriously, im stumped!

at a time when we are repeatedly told our jails are full, and there isnt the room for the "serious" criminals, you want to lock someone up for something that can be painted over?

deary me.

3) to the "i love the murals, but i hate that ugly tagging" brigade - you dont get one without the other. its like saying, " i love guitarre solo's in my fav. rock music songs, but i hate it when my neighbour plays his guitarre when im doing something."

4) and yes, hip hop culture has probably added more to the general well being of our society than any other culture i can think of...

it basically empowered a lot (and i mean a lot) of young, disadvanteaged kids to express themselves in a postive way and to make something of themselves.

the end.
