It might have seemed incongruous to encounter Incredible String Band founder Robin Williamson among the little boxes of a 1960s new town, but the Hawth's intimate studio served this pairing well. It felt like we had dropped by a bar where old timers were playing blisteringly well.
Renbourn and Williamson, on mainly harp, ranged widely from blues to traditional Irish via Dylan, several originals and an AC/DC song.
The set was stitched together by droll tales delivered with such warmth that even Renbourn's admission that Celtic songs register high on the Richter Scale of misery couldn't chill the cockles of the heart.
In the interval Williamson stayed chatting to the audience while Renbourn greeted friends. It was so chummy you forgot these guys were legends. Until they played.
