Worried about ladyboys' past

I agree with Jean Calder that The Lady Boys of Bangkok is a bit of a freak show (The Argus, May 3) and it does make you wonder if these boys were forced into this lifestyle by poverty.
Ms Calder's comments that "What we do know is that in Britain those who become private dancers and sex workers are disproportionately likely to have been exploited or abused in childhood" really struck a chord with me, especially after reading the article about the young girl bought in Africa who ended up as a sex slave in Brighton (The Argus, April 14).
