Two men were led away in handcuffs after a man was hospitalised in a brawl at a house party.
Shocked neighbours looked on as officers arrived in eight police cars to calm the fracas at a house in Buckingham Street, Brighton, shortly after 5am today.
The victim was carried out on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.
Eye-witnesses said he had head injuries but South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was unable to confirm.
A spokeswoman said the victim had fallen down some steps.
One neighbour said: "I saw the police arrest two men and take three others away in a van. There were a lot of officers down there. I haven't seen anything like it in this road before."
The road was sealed off until late morning as scene of crime investigators carried out work at the house.
Sussex Police said investigations were ongoing and officers were waiting to speak to the victim.
