Brighton is the happiest place to live in the UK, according to a survey published today.

A poll found almost 94% of people living in the city have a happy home, compared to a national average of 85%.

Belfast came bottom of a list of 16 places featured in the study, with just over 70% of people living there saying their humble abode was happy.

Cardiff was the happiest place in Wales and fourth in the UK with 90.2%, while Edinburgh was the top place in Scotland with a happiness rating of just over 91%.

The study, commissioned by O2 Home Broadband to support its Happy Homes campaign, claimed there are seven key factors to having a happy home.

These included living in Brighton, being aged 45 or over, being married, having two or more children, earning between £25,000 and £34,000 a year, having friendly neighbours and a broadband link.

Charlotte Barrow, from VisitBrighton.com, said: "We're not surprised to hear that Brighton has the happiest homes.

"We have all the benefits of living in a city - such as the culture, shopping, restaurants and nightlife - with the added bonus of being by the sea which keeps us relaxed and calm.

"Also, as Brighton is a compact place, people generally walk around. This means they get to know their neighbours, adding to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere of the city."

Research conducted by Tickbox in association with the Happiness Project questioned 1,273 people across the UK between May 7, 2008 and May 12.

"The study, commissioned by O2 Home Broadband, claimed having Broadband (perhaps O2? and of course living in Brighton) is the key to happiness"

WHAT AN UTTER LOAD OF MARKETING RUBBISH BY A FIRM THAT OFFERS ONE OF THE WORST BROADBAND SERVICES AROUND

I will say however, that Im very happy living in Brighton, but its certainly not because of having an O2 Broadband connection, because I havent, and am not likely to.

94% of people have a happy home???? Have you ever walked around Brighton? Loads and loads of people dont even have a place to call home. All the chavs from london come and buy all the houses so people cant even afford a home in their own city. Ask these people, I bet there not happy!

Bet a lot of them can spell 'they're' though.

Cardiff was the happiest place in Wales

Given that Cardiff was the only place in Wales involved in the study, I'm guessing that this didn't come as a shock to those geniuses at O2 Broadband.

I would take issue with the comment made by Clive about Chavs moving down from London and buying up all the houses. Chavs are probably the least mobile social group in the UK, they tend to live on benefits at the lower end of the social spectrum, I doubt if this extends as far as leaving London to buy a home in B&H. If you go to Churchill Square they can be easily spotted wearing cheap sports clothing, Elizabeth Duke jewellery and scowling at old ladies. It appears that you need to be relatively wealthy to set up home in Brighton, that a fair percentage are really happy with their lot, there are also many who have lost touch with reality.

Clive that's 94% of the people sampled not 94% of the population as a whole.

i don't have any figures to hand as they probably don't exist but the notion that most houses in Brighton and Hove go to Londoner's is probably a misconcepton.

I am quite happy here, so is practically everybody I know. And I can only think of a couple of people I know who have relocated from London.

It is such a shame that we don'y have ANY local MPs or councillers who will speak out about City College, set to throw thousands and thousands of our money at a pointless rebuild (on top of the very, very generous wages drawn by management). We deserve better than this.

It's a shame that none of our representatives is prepared to speak out about City Colleges proposal to waste our money on pointless schemes (on top of the very, very generous wages drawn by management.

If everyone is sooo bloomin' happy in Brighton, how come the place is such a rubbish-strewn dump and there is so much aggression around? Perhaps a lot of this so-called 'happiness' is chemically-induced? Or maybe it's just the so-called researchers who were all on drugs??

"All the Chavs come from London to buy all the houses so locals cant afford them???"

DO THEY??????????

You've been reading the 'Morning Star' again Clive! Total rubbish. Firstly, Chavs worry about buying new trackies and trainers, lager, drugs, and pay as you go mobile phone top ups. The LAST thing on their mind is buying property!!!! How do you get a flippin mortgage when you've got no job, four pregnant girl friends, got a criminal record, the IQ of a total dimwit, and you live on benefit!!!!

All these rumours about Londoners (of any sort) buying up property in Brighton, are put about by people on low wages, who probably couldnt afford to buy property anywhere (except maybe the worst parts of Liverpool), let alone at a popular SE seaside resort.

Obviously people have moved from other cities to live in Brighton, in the same way as I moved from Brighton to live in Northampton for a number of years, because of my job. And as London is many times bigger (30 miles from one side to the other) than any city in the UK, by the law of averages more people WILL have moved from London to live here than from any other single city! But my friend has just moved from Brighton to London to work - so what does that prove!

Sadly, just because you may be born in a particularly city, it doesnt follow that you have first choice of all the property!

Only a question Clive - but are you one of the many people in Brighton that thinks Brighton Council owes them a living, perhaps somewhere to live, perhaps free everything? Maybe you are not one of those, but you do sound extremely jealous.

In the interest of balance, I would like to add that I use 02 Broadband and it's been a very reliable service with good customer service and quite cheap too, although mainly as I already had a mobile contract with them.
