More poverty in rural areas

More inequality exists in East Sussex than ever before, a new report has revealed.

People in rural areas of the county typically enjoy healthier lifestyles and a better quality of life but it comes at a cost, according to the report by the Commission for Rural Communities.

The commission found higher house prices and lower wages were typical in more remote areas.

The latest report, the 10th of its type, claims to provide a definitive picture of rural England.

Stuart Burgess, chairman of the commission, said: "Whilst there are many advantages to living and working in rural parts of East Sussex, there remain some significant challenges. The quality of life may often be better in rural areas but this is not the case everywhere and for everyone."

The report will be used by the CRC to advise the Government so the needs and circumstances of rural communities are represented more fully when critical decisions are made.
