A huge rescue operation has been launched after a swimmer reportedly got into difficulties off Brighton beach.

Police and coastguard helicopters are searching the water near the Palace Pier after several sightings of a person, believed to be male, in the heavy swell.

A spokesman for Brighton Lifeboat said a pile of clothes were found on the beach.

Earlier this month Irishman Ruairi Kelly, 28, died after being caught in powerful currents near the pier.

I've been watching this from my desk for the past few hours - two helicopters, a rescue boat - it's been incredibly distressing thinking I am looking out at someone struggling and probably dying in the waves and despite all this effort - there is nothing anyone can do to help.
Amazing effort from the coastguard though, well done.

i was on a day trip to brighton, it was me and my friends that noticed the body and alerted the lifeguards to where the man was when they couldnt see him.
so yes, all these insensitive people - the man died.
they only just managed to rescue the body after 2 rescue helicopters, lots of lifeguards and a life boat.

im sorry, but seeing that has left me in shock, seeing a man floating face down in the sea - dead.
hope you apologise because some poor family has lost someone.
