A man is fighting for his life in hospital after he was brutally assaulted and left for dead.

The 28-year-old from Portslade was attacked outside the King Of Rock shop in Kings Road, Brighton, at about 5am on Sunday.

The offender pushed the victim to the floor before assaulting him and then got into a black 4x4 vehicle and left the scene.

The victim suffered serious head injuries and remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Police are still trying to establish whether any weapon was used.

A 29-year-old man has been arrested and questioned by police before being released on bail while officers carry out further inquiries.

all these viscious assaults are happening in the early hours when drink must be involved. the new licencing laws and the ridiculous amount of nightclubs in brighton needs looking at quickly before we turn into an extension of vile south east london.

If Plod were to double the amount of manpower in the area from 1am to 5am instead of having silver Mercs and BMW's on the A23/M23 at a similar time on a sunday morning this would probably not have happened. I often go north on that road early on a sunday morning to be met by sussex's finest pointing a speed gun at my car.

They should be ashamed of themselves.

While drink may have something to do with it, it has to be more about out culture than extended licencing hours. Other countires have long opening hours and generally don't have the same problem (until us Brits head over there!)

We're fast developing a growning minority here where violence is an acceptable way to either get what you want from someone else, or as a way to seek a cheap thrill.

I was in Hamburg, Germany recently for a week and went out every night drinking until the early hours(4a.m+)-I didn't see ONE violent incident. At the weekend there was a highly visible police presence(riot squads in fact), stationed in numbered platoons in different sections of the St.Pauli/Reeperbahn area. The locals never battered an eyelid and just got on with enjoying their night, no antagonising or goading of officers and no aggression from the police-maybe we can take a leaf out of the Germans book?

Culture yes. In some countries it is a matter of great shame to be drunk and incapable in public. In England, it's almost a matter for congratulations when someone behaves boorishly and/or hauls the content of their stomachs onto the pavement.

I endorse mr.dribble's post. This applies to most of Europe except for the UK.Having recently spent a night out in Frankfurt centre until the early hours,I felt safe. There was no trouble and indeed buses of riot police strategically placed works.Seems that the UK Government/Police havent a clue.Too soft and frightened of upsetting the yobs.Labour count on them for votes so dont want to upset them.

Agreed entirely! The government has a lot to answer for. First they take away smoking from the pubs which hugely affected sales and then as compensation they extended licensing hours which didn't work. To add insult to injury they don't man the streets for the early drunken hours they have created and thus made our streets unsafe - brilliant!!
