Police want to speak to a teenager who was caught on camera hanging his head out of a car window travelling at 120mph.

The 30-second clip, which was posted on YouTube, shows a grinning teenage boy winding down the window of a car and sticking his head out as the vehicle hurtles down a road in Crawley.

The clip is titled “120mph head out window almost hits tree”. The driver and another passenger in the car laugh as it appears that the car swings close to a tree and their friend toys with death.

Last night the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) condemned the motorist and his passengers for putting their lives in danger as well as risking other people’s lives.

A spokesman said: “People involved in pranks like this might think it is just a bit of fun, and they themselves might not be injured – although that always remains a possibility. But even if they are not hurt, the distraction caused to the driver could result in an accident in which an innocent person may be injured.”

Sussex Police want to talk to anyone who knows the boy or any of the people involved in the life-threatening stunt.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “We are anxious to speak to anyone who knows the individuals involved in this irresponsible incident.

“Dangerous driving of any kind is not tolerated.”

The person who posted the video has also posted stunts including a teenager attempting to lift a 95kg weight.

Chief Inspector Mark Trimmer, from Sussex Police’s road policing unit, said: “We have been working hard to reduce the number of casualties and collisions on the Sussex road network.

“Roads in and around Crawley are subject to regular patrols by officers in both marked and unmarked vehicles.

“Regular operations are conducted, targeting inappropriate and unlawful use of vehicles.

“Unmarked cars are used on a daily basis to target those whose driving puts others at risk.

“In addition, officers conduct regular static speed checks.

“We would like to remind people of the need to drive responsibly.

Anyone found committing offences will be dealt with robustly.”

Anyone with any information should call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.

Why dont police concentrate on preventing proper crime TODAY rather than worrying about an offence that occurred potentailly weeks ago and had no consequences?

I am sure the hundreds of people who have been burgled/assulted in the last few weeks without seeing the perpretrator caught are happy police time and effert is being used on this tripe.

As for the deed, even I dont think 120mph is very clever, but hey, at least hes burning petrol faster than normal, and it all goes into Gordon Browns back pocket - god knows he needs it

So someone driving down the road at 120mph has no consequences?

Personally I wouldnt care if this blob of useless humanity had his head lopped off but I feel for everyone that is forced to share the road with him..

Gosh, what an intelligent comment.

So doing 120mph is ok? How about telling that to the innocent dog walker strolling along that they kill when they lose control. Or the people in the car they crash into who are killed or maimed for life. What about the young daughter of the man they kill as they spin out of control pulling stupid stunts like this.

Yes. No consequences whatsoever. And shame on the police for trying to prevent deaths caused by idiots like this with no regard for anyone but themselves.

Here in Spain the police work on the basis that some idiot sticking his head out of a window at 120 mph is likely to hurt who?????????
Yes himself, and who cares.I know some Guardia here and they still turd a blind eye to youths riding motorcycles helmetless because if their heads come into contact with the road who is likely to be hurt????? Yes the muppet with no helmet.OK someone has to clear up the mess, but it creates a job for somebody.
Of course driving a car at 120mph is not to be condoned and can be very dangerous to other people,so that's a no no.

120mph is dangerous, but sticking your head out of the window is plain stupid. that is why they removed opening windows from trains. if this lad is that idiotic, who cares if he gets his head knocked off? well, his parents for one thing, plus all the emergency services who are left to clean up after this moron. his parents probably won't believe how stupid their offspring is, and claim he is really 'a good boy'. get real, he is bordering on sub-human. its the innocent people i feel sorry for.

If we had unrestricted motorways (as in Germany), then this young 'scamp' could legally and safly drive up the M23 at any speed he so wished.

Our beloved Sussex Police are trying to convict me of a motoring offence that happened at 3am in January!! It was very quiet and I was doing 3mph over the limit. That's how pedantic the pigs can get, so if they can get someone for doing 50mph over the national speed limit, you can be **** sure they'll persue it. I just feel sorry for the poor sod of a driver who's gonna lose his/her licence if they catch up with them.
