Foreign student murdered in "racist" attack

Mohammed al-Majed Mohammed al-Majed

A 16-year-old foreign student was killed by a mob of drunken thugs in a sickening racist attack.

Mohammed al-Majed, from Qatar, in the Middle East, was beaten and stamped on by a gang outside a kebab shop.

The teenager, a student at the EF International School of English in Hastings, died late on Sunday night from a serious head injury.

Mohammed, who was described by friends as “like a brother to everyone”, is believed to be the son of a wealthy family in the oil-rich Gulf state.

He and a group of friends were set upon – apparently for looking and sounding different – near the junction of Robertson Street and the A259 seafront road.

Friends said they were beaten, kicked and pelted with glass bottles by the mob, who stamped repeatedly on Mohammed’s head before leaving him for dead and launching further assaults on his terrified pals.

Sussex Police said they are treating the death as murder and are investigating it as “racially motivated”.

Officers said there was a dispute between two groups of youths outside The USA Fried Chicken and Kebab House on Friday night.

The takeaway was used as a hangout by foreign students as it has a large licensed bar area with pool tables, arcade machines and couches.

Remzi Tanriverdi, 43, the kebab shop owner, said trouble started after a pair of well-known troublemakers started drinking lager at the picnic benches outside.

They were joined by two more youths and two girls, all of whom were drinking beer and alcopops.

Dr Tanriverdi, a doctor of political science with two degrees who moved to England from Turkey five years ago, asked them to leave but they refused and hurled abuse at him.

The former National Project Co-ordinator for the UN in Turkey said: “As soon as I saw them, I knew those boys would cause trouble. Whenever they turn up, trouble soon follows.

“After I asked them to leave, I noticed a police car pull up outside, so I went over and spoke to the officers.

“I asked them to keep an eye on the boys, and they said they would – then left.

“Less than an hour later, Mohammed – who was like a brother to everyone here – had been beaten to death by those boys.

“It’s so sad, there are no words that can describe the horror of what happened – and for nothing. The attack was completely unprovoked and without reason.”

Mohammed’s room-mate, Abdul Aziz, 17, said: “We are all deeply shocked at what’s happened. Mohammed was everyone’s friend.

“We cannot believe something like this could happen. We will never come back here.”

Another friend, who asked not to be named, suffered severe bruising and a head injury needing six stitches.

He said: “It’s like a nightmare. I am in total shock. I can’t even bear to think about it.

“I blame myself for not saving Mohammed, but where I come from, we are not used to this kind of thing happening. At home, we never need to defend ourselves like that.”

Three men aged 17, 18 and 20 were arrested and interviewed and released on police bail following the attack.

Dr Tanriverdi says he has been attacked more than 25 times since buying the shop in 2005. He said: “Something must be done to stop these mindless thugs from destroying Britain, as they are doing.”

Detective Chief Inspector Graham Pratt, said: “The young man was a visitor to Hastings and his death is indeed tragic. Our thoughts are with his family.”

Leader of Hastings Borough Council, Peter Pragnell, said: “Anything we can do to help the police, we will of course do and we will continue trying to make Hastings as safe a place as possible.”

Have our say, even the evening argus must know how the public feel and I include the vast majority of the decent youth. But when you have the minister for youth, the police, social services and the new fascist political correctness brigade falling over themselves to protect the cowardly scum, nothing will be done until the decent people say enough is enough and unite to rid this country of them and their scaghead parents (and I use the term parents loosly in their case.)

The perpetrators of this crime are animals and should be swiftly dealt with. However, people are inherently good (99%), so the "parents" of these animals should also be punished, because a parents sole responsibility it to bring up their children in a loving, warm environment and teach them respect for others, as well as all the other values; so those children become hardworking, law abiding member of the community. They have clearly failed in their responsibility so should be punished. It's like owning a dangerous dog and allowing it to maul a child. In this case the owner would face jail and the animal would be destroyed.

I don't see the point in putting any comments on this story because they will get deleted. I don't see the point in saying anything about this kind of behaviour any more because no-one is listening. I mean, why should anyone with any power listen? They've got they 70k+ jobs, big posh houses... They never see any of this stuff apart from what they read in the paper. And as far as they are concerned, when they closed that newspaper, the story has gone away. Until something likes this effects them directly, there will be no changes in society. And that is the biggest problem we have to deal with. Not the chavs and the scum ruining the UK, but the people with the power to change it just turning a blind eye ALL the TIME.

THE ONLY WAY TO GET CHANGE IS BY USING YOUR VOTE AT THE NEXT ELECTION. IF THREE YOUTHS OF 17, 18, AND 20 DO NOT HAVE THE RESPECT FOR VISITORS, OR ANYONE COME TO THAT, THEN THEY DESERVE WHAT THEY GET. HOW WOULD THEY LIKE BEING SHIPPED TO QATAR AND SEEING WHAT THEY DO TO MURDERERS THERE? THEIR PARENTS SHOULD BE ASHAMED.

Sorry Maxi, however true your comments concerning the victims country of origin may be, I may fail to see their relevance to this forum, and indeed the need to devote the majority of your response to them. This forum is to discuss the issues surrounding his death and not the short commings of the country that accident of birth placed him in.

I'm afraid that using the bad practices of other countries really doesn't wash. This lad was in Britain. He should have been safe to have been walking the streets of Hastings,or indeed any British town or city. However, the truth is that Britain today is as barbaric as any other country in the world. Our sense of fair play and justice is decimated and it is simply the law of the jungle and the survival of the fittest/richest.If you are not in either of these categories go about your business quickly and quietly and hope not to be noticed.
Britain is a dangerous place to be.

Sad to read about the boy who was murdered by vile youths.
Very sad to read the comment made by maxiboy who seems to think it is ok to murder someone if they happen to come from a country that doesn't suit his fine morals!Indeed! How can he justify saying that others come from 'sick society' when he himself has such warped views.

Maxiboy I don’t really know where you come from or what you believe in, but to be honest I don’t really care. Because whatever you are, from wherever you might be, any sensible being would at least know not to insult a country morning a son it just lost. You call Qatar a “sick sick nation indeed”? yet the interesting observation from this page alone is that not one person from Qatar repaid your obvious hatred and animosity fueled by whatever fallacy you fail to overcome, with one word of aggression. Instead they repay your false assumptions, flagrant lies, and ludicrous conclusions with concrete examples and accurate statistics.
What actually encouraged me to even reply to you was only to point out one more thing I was afraid you might be unable to see: those very People from this so called “sick sick nation indeed” actually took the time to reply to you. Not with the intention of insulting you, which was probably a lot easier, but with the intention of educating you. These very people from this so called “sick sick nation indeed” actually cared enough about you, a person whom I’m sure they never knew and probably will never see, to carefully and clearly point out to you how you were wrong. These very people from this so called “sick sick nation indeed” seem to be a lot more educated, sophisticated, and civil then you.
I only wounder who really is “sick sick indeed” ?

I'm glad Maxiboy's comment was deleted. It's a shame that it lives on in other peoples' quotes. I hope the people of Doha reading this will realise that maxiboy in no way represents a typical British person. His warped views probably come from his habit of reading the Daily Mail

I liked the way the police were informed that trouble was brewing, and they dealt with it by driving off and letting the thugs murder someone. Good job, Sussex Police!

I feel embarassed and ashamed when i think of what this dead boy's parents must think of the British now, and I feel sorry for the language schools operating in hastings as they are bound to face a big downturn in numbers which will have an effect on the already poor economy of the town. all the guilty should be sent to jail for a very long time, no allowance made for 'feeling deeply remorseful' ' changing their life' etc, they have changed the life of the murdered boy's family for ever.

Hastings is often jokingly refered to as a drinking town with a fishing problem, after this latest alcohol fuelled act of violence we should stop joking & see that it is still shamefully a fishing town with a drink problem. Factor into that a massive drug & unemployment problem & you've got a receipe for social break down. The anti social behaviour of a good percetage of the town's folk needs to be tackled NOW. Police & authorities need to actually enforce laws on drinking in public. under age drinking. dog fouling, littering & anti social behaviour & the courts need to back this up with tough sentancing. Too many times violent crime in Hastings is let off with non-custodial sentances. It would not surprize me if the thugs who have taken this young student's life have a string of previous convictions. Too often i feel ashamed of living in this (potentially wonderful) town.

Until we have a government that is prepared to get us out of the 'European court of human rights' (which gives more rights to the criminals than the victims), bring back discipline in schools, is prepared to send 1st offence yobs guilty of assault to young offenders institutions for a few months, stops all benefit to those that can work but wont work (so these people are not hanging about with nothing to do all day, and will be tired enough at night to want to go to bed), get police out on the streets instead of in the office doing paperwork, etc etc etc, we are likely to see the British yob flourishing.

And 'Ms Feline1' - do you really thing the police officers in question can find time to sit outside a kebab shop IN CASE an offence takes place? They could easily have several calls requiring attention at that very time. I bet you've just been done for speeding or something. A very silly, and under the circumstances very insensitive comment.

Hi all I’m also from Qatar. In fact I was deciding to study in Britain but now I don't think so if these crimes keep increasing many people will leave Britain and the people in Qatar want pay for studying in UK because they are afraid. Do you know how much Qatari people spent it in UK in 2007?? Its 56384464$ just in studying do you imagine that? But know I don't think so!!

In fact I have a lot of friend from UK and they are working here in Qatar also they surprised about what happened? I am really sad for this chilled it's really heart to know that it's happen in UK we don't even have this kind of thing.
