A supermarket could be stripped of its alcohol licence after selling drink to 16 year olds.

Somerfield, in Queens Parade, North Road, Lancing, could lose its licence to sell alcohol after it was twice caught by police.

Sussex Police has written to Adur District Council to ask for the store’s licence to be reviewed after the three underage teenagers bought drink from the store in two test purchases in March and May.

A report to licensing councillors says the force’s attempts to keep children safe are “seriously undermined” by staff at the store breaking the law.

The police report tells how two 16-year-old girls bought alcohol at the store and that afterwards the person who sold it was fined £80 and store bosses were warned.

However, in a follow-up test purchase, another 16-year-old girl bought drink from the store unchallenged. The report says the person serving her did not even look at the girl.

It continues: “This store is situated in an area of Lancing where there have been a series of problems involving local youths, under-age drinking and disorder, in and around the store and at the recreation ground nearby. In the past there has been use of dispersal orders for groups of youths.”

Officers want the store to be banned for two months from selling alcohol and once it resumes, to start challenging people who look under 21 to prove their age.

The force also wants a supervisor to oversee evening alcohol sales.

A spokesman for Somerfield said: “Attempted purchases of alcohol by or for under age consumers is still a major issue for the retail sector. We all have a responsibility to continually review our policies and controls to remove the possibility of such transactions.”

The chain has changed its challenge 21 policy to a challenge 25, asking people who look under 25 for proof of their age.

This is wrong, Lancing is a deeply depressing place. For gods sake, the olny cinema in the town closed down 20 years ago, and is now a discount carpet shop.

Whether you are young or old. As a result anyone over the age of say 12 should be able to have a 'drinky' in Lancing. Just do so in moderation.

How can you expect a "quality" supermarket such as these to keep such a tight reign on such a silly law like this (sarc)

The sooner these CLOWNS get taken over by the Co-Op the better!

Somerfield to co-op. The co-op are dreadful, I find their level of service appaling, they no longer give out Divvy stamps, and their pre-packed sandwiches always revolve around 'prawns'

But they do a rather spiffing range of "fair trade" drinking cocoa!

And I can always get my Toledo parked up there without any problems!

I prefer revolving sandwhiches with ham in the middle it makes for a much more interseting visual display when out shopping..

I *knew* it would be Somerfield!
I've just got back from visiting the St James St store because they had overcharged my friend for something. I had to hassle them 4 times because they kept blocking a fire exit, one of the supervisors humiliated a bloke with learning difficulties in front of a massive queue (when I'd had to go & fetch her twice to sort out the problem as she ignored the cashier) & there's just a generally unpleasant atmosphere.
And they've stopped selling the cheese & onion bread rolls.

So the supermarket were caught out by 16 year old's makeing so-called "test purchases" on the instigation of Sussex Police.I suggest there is another word to describe this, its called "ENTRAPMENT".It is not lawful for a person of 16 years of age to perchase alcohol(except in a restaraunt as part of a meal which is lawful)these two young ladies have in fact commited an offence to wit buying or attempting to buy alchol underage and are as guilty of this offence as the store that sold it to them and they should also be prosecuted for their part in it as we are all equal under the law(yes I know the Chief-Constable and his apron-wearing chums from ACPO don't see it that way!).
In addition it could(in my opinion)be suggested that Sussex Police in instigateing this action colluded with these two young women and were thus an equal party in the commission of this offence and that Sussex Police should(again in my opinion)be prosecuted for a) conspiricy to commit an offence and b) aiding and abetting an offender/s.
(and on that day satan will go ice-skateing to work)!!!!
