A top level summit will be held to create a masterplan to drive drug addicts and vagrants from a shopping area.

Brighton and Hove City Council and Sussex Police chiefs have asked for a meeting with the newly formed London Road Traders' Association.

On Tuesday, The Argus reported how business owners and residents said the road had become overrun by heroin users, shoplifters and alcoholics.

More than 30 traders have signed up to the group in an attempt to clean up the once prosperous shopping area, urging the authorities to take action.

Council leader Mary Mears, who will chair the meeting, said: “I share the concerns of businessmen and women in London Road, who should not have to put up with violence, drug-taking, antisocial drinking or any criminal activity.

“And I can promise traders and residents here and now that there is no question of the council or the police ignoring this issue.

“I am making it a priority for this council to work with the police and local people to reduce significantly the social problems in London Road but I can only do that by talking to business people to find out exactly what the problems are.

“There are important initiatives in the pipeline to tackle this issue but I understand the need for immediate action.

“I am confident that, together and through a mixture of tackling the root causes and tough enforcement, we can address this blight on the area by coming up with a clear strategy and action plan.”

Coun Mears has sent a letter to the London Road Traders’ Association and Sussex Police inviting them to talks next week although a date and venue have not been confirmed.

Joy Flowers, who has set up the traders’ association, said: “Of course I’m pleased because it’s a good start.

“But we will wait and see what happens because a few days of police presence isn’t enough, we need long term action.

“Already we have seen police officers have popped up on the street and the green by St Peter’s Church is completely empty, instead of being full drunks and addicts.”

What is the answer to the problems in London Road?

surely the council have been aware of this for months? if you look at the comments from yesterday its not a secret!! so how come it takes the argus to get something done? london road is a dump and has been for years, the problem is the town is full of drug addicts and drunks, the church at dyke road and cambridge road is also full of them. i wonder if the selling of the big issue has somehow made begging acceptable? and living off handouts from the taxpayer better than working? police need to lock up the drunks.

Well Mark, selling the Big Issue and living off handouts is preferable to burglary and robbery. Please let us know your masterplan on solving the drug problem.

a summit wow, does it take a summit to see the bleeding obvious. we need a permanent police presence on all our streets and a zero tolerance approach from the police and council, to eradicate all forms of anti social behaviour, that has been tolerated for at least a generation. up and coming generations are knowing no different and we need to re-set responsibility and values towards eachother.

yes and do- gooders like you have made the town a dump, while its your money to give away , its shopkeepers who have to deal with them when they have got off there head on what ever they have spent your cash on, as bugeye says zero tolerance to drunks and anti social behavior. is it any wonder the town has so many closed shops? the town is vile with these people around.

And just where are you intending to drive them to, do you really have any ideas. Words are cheap. What is your plan? First you have to accept that these people are way way past caring. Homeless, jobless, potless, no prospects. Is the answer, in a bottle, a can, in a quick fix. of course not we know that. but to them it takes away the pain of worthlessness dejection FOR A FEW HOURS.and with the need breeds crime shoplifting ect, ect, ect. So what is the answer? Hound them out by all means but on who's doorstep are they going to land, use some of the billions WHICH INCEDENTLY IS OBSCENE wasted on the 2week event 2012 to help sort the problem out. Unfortunatly its not going to go away
