Police and council chiefs have denied a run-down road has been sacrificed at the expense of other areas in a city.

Sussex Police Chief Inspector Laurence Taylor and Brighton and Hove City Council leader Mary Mears spoke during an hour-long grilling from readers of The Argus as part of our Friday Inquisition feature.

They were answering questions from residents and traders along London Road who believe the once prosperous shopping area has been left to decay.

Mrs Bailey, who submitted a question to The Argus website, asked: “We have so many off licences open late, rehab centres and needle exchanges in this area we feel as though the council is trying to contain drug and alcohol problems in this area.

“How come the council have allowed all these things to open in this one place and why are facilities for drug addicts not spread throughout the city?”

Coun Mears replied: “I can understand why you might think this is the case, but the fact is treatment facilities and support centres exist all across the city.

“Where people have problems, we’re committed to offering help and support.”

Ch Insp Taylor said: “I’d like to add that whilst it’s very easy to assume that all people seeking support from such centres are involved in crime, it must be recognised that on the whole they want help and support in changing the direction of their life.

"There is very strong evidence across the city that intervening at this early stage has a significant impact in the reduction of crime.”

Johnny asked: “It seems like the police are happy for London Road to be a hangout for drug users and petty criminals. Is this true?

“Are you letting them hang around there just so they don’t cause more problems somewhere else instead?”

Ch Insp Taylor replied: “Firstly, no this isn’t true. There are no parts of Brighton more important than another in terms of policing response, and we will treat all areas with equal importance.

“Obviously some parts of the city will have different issues to contend with than others.

“We put a lot of resources into the London Road area and certainly don’t sit back and ignore issues that come to light.”

Responding to a question from Spencer, coun Mears said the authority was making plans to improve London Road.

She said: “There have been many changes in the London Road area over the years, which has contributed to this decline.

“The council recognises that London Road is one of the main areas we need to concentrate on and plans are being developed to address this.”

In a previous thread on this subject, the dirty looking woman that sells drugs outside Somerfield was mentioned more than once. I havent been in the area for a while (i try not to) but i certainly hope she has been arrested and bounced around in the back of a police van, before being charged and held on remand.

I work in one of the shops on London Road. I am constantly bombarded with "gangs" of methidon users and drunks hanging out side the shop and surrounding areas. They hang out in the stairwell of the 1st floor of the London Road car park, shouting drinking, shooting up and punching each other, on a nice day they lie on the road by the metal stairs leading up by the car park to the station. The shout and swear walking up and down Elder place before and after they have been to get their "FIX" for their "Addiction" then enter London road to buy booze from one of the 10 or so off licences' that are only too happy to sell it to them. They leave their drugs on my shop counter, they try to shoplift items in order to pay for their addiction or buy booze. They attack each other and passer-bys, try to stab each other in my shop whilst me and my colleagues are stuck in the middle of it. We are up the nicer end of the road and I'VE HAD ENOUGH!!!!!. They are driving business out of the area, and no new shopping centres or supermaket chains is gonna get rid of the problem. There needs to be a zero tolerance on anti social behaviour, Banning acohol being consumed on the streets or on the level, and with harsh penalties when (Not if) caught. Alcohol shouldnt be sold by newsagents. A visiable police presence at all times, not just when people voice their concerns. A response to crime incidents as soon as they happen not 2 days after or never at all in the case of the attempted stabbing incident. The sad truth is they know who they are, they know where they are and probably what their doing, and they don't seem to care unless probed about it. How about CCTV?? Surely More evidence, more convictions, less crime?? Or should we just put up with these Bumbling Inspector Clouseau's instead of an efficient police force???

I am probably one of the most pro police people anywhere. At times they have the hardest and most hazardous job there is, and get very little thanks, and i'll be first to give them credit. Before anyone gets too critical, remember the PC's we see around the city take their job instructions from senior officers - they are not ignoring the big issues by choice.

Right thats the good bit.

The bad bit, is that when it comes to sorting out the scum and dregs that populate London Road, and a few other areas of Brighton, they do virtually nothing. A few token 'stop and questions' do not mean anything. It needs a gloves off zero tolerance approach to the problem. Anyone walking around with open cans or bottles of drink should have it confiscated, and they should be photographed. Anyone persisting, or certainly those found with drugs should be at least be thrown in the back of a Police van. In fact get one of those big prison vans, and drive around all day picking up the druggies. When its full, turf them out around 6pm and let them walk home. Make it so unpleasant for them, them will move to Liverpool or somewhere. Contravening their human rights? - sorry they dont have any, and in any event, let them sue.

Drug dealers should be treated like the scum they are. If one or two were given 25yr sentences for 1st offences, the number would soon diminish. Do remember (before the loony do-gooders start) that Class A drug dealers are knowingly killing people slowly and surely, and that can include your kids, in order to make money.

The slippery slope that is being created in certain areas is getting very steep already, and it could come to the point where it cannot be handled.

We have zero tolerance here in Hull against open drug and alcohol use in the City Centre. This has resulted in a place where you can shop with complete peace of mind.We only have one Big Issue seller as well!!

zero tolerance has to be the stance all over the city on all anti social behaviour otherwise we are just inviting all the drug addicts and alcoholics to come and live by the sea in the sun and we will help you all and not bother you. what is the matter with the authorities here, soft touch brighton and hove is driving decent people out. who cares if zero tolerance drives these people to other cities or towns good let them deal with it too. all places should have zero tolerance until they realise change their behaviour. if its true all the people that genuinely want help to change are not causing problems why have we got a problem, because many do not want to change but go through these processes to keep their benefits, so stop the benefits we are paying to anyone caught being antisocial, and better still make them work for our money, cleaning up the mess they are making.

I work on London Road.

Today, whilst I wasn't paying attention to the front of the shop my wallet was stolen. Thanks, by the way.

Yesterday a police car drove past me as I was walking past a group of people overtly drinking alcohol on the street (at about 1pm too). Next to them there was a lovely man exchanging something with another. I doubt it was words of wisdom, somehow.

The police, oblivious of course, are literally turning their heads. And I do mean literally.

Not happy.

Thanks 'whatithink' - believe me, if i was running the council it WOULD be sorted out, and in a matter of weeks not months.

Im sure the vast majority of people reading this thread want this mess sorted out - across the city.

So all the people reading this, get a couple of envelopes ready, and send a demand for action to the police (Brighton Police, Johns Road - that will find it) and the council. If enough people do it (three or four is no good) they might start doing what is needed. Do something about the alcohol and drug problem in Brighton, and other crimes will plummet, so its 2 birds killed with 1 stone.

Do it people - on monday morning there should be a load of letters in the lobby at the Police station.

Isacc Hunt - you have a way with words! - and everything you said earlier is dead right - i will vote for you too! This has got a bit of momentum going now so lets keep it going - send letters demanding this 0 tolerance approach is applied all over Brighton&Hove - send them to the Police, to the Council - they have a dept dealing with anti social behaviour etc, and dont forget your MP (although historically i dont think they do very much at all - let them prove me wrong). I live in Hove, and while it may not have the problems (as badly) as the London Road area, i see things going on that need the hard handed approach.

As Issac said, very very few of these street drunks beggars and drug users have any rights. They lost all their rights when they chose to live outside of decent society. There are a few that seek help, but we all know that 9/10 choose to be what they are - 24hr drunken drug users begging for money to feed their habits, and of course in many cases drug dealing and thieving for the same purpose.
I came through London Road today (sun) and who was congregating around the benches outside the old Co-op? - at least 10 filthy drunks and drug users all totally out of their brains, screaming foul language, shoving each other around, and acting in a threatening manner to anyone nearby. The driver of the car in front of mine was paying particular attention to their anticts and attracted a quantity of verbal abuse in return - no suprise there.
I hope the Senior Police themselves are paying attention to this column, because this should be dealt with city wide as a matter of urgency. I do like the suggestion from Isacc concerning the use of a large prison van - i will gladly be the driver if you wish.

The people making the kind of abusive ignorant statements that are above remind one of the kind of thing the Nazis said - you people make me shiver with fear at your blatent hostility and hatred, - it is true that in each one of your family and extended family that someone will have sufferred from some form of addiction or mental health problem, attitudes like yours accesserbates these problems and makes it harder for people to get help for them. The remedy you lot suggest would be the same as kicking a dog because it is bleeding to death! Shame on you!

Oh my god - another nieve, ivory tower living, do gooding knob head

Get ONE thing right numb skull - the vast majority of these 'people' (i use the term people in the loosest sense possible) do NOT want help, live the life they do by choice, often cause havoc, nervous break downs, loss of property, personal injury, fear, and generally ruin the lives of decent people who have to contribute THEIR money in taxes towards these scum bags disgusting life style.

You are out of your tiny little brain. If you like them so much, give them half your wages, or let them stay at your house.
