One of three fossil-inspired models is to be transformed into a full-scale statue for the centre of a notorious roundabout.

The Seven Dials junction, one of Brighton’s accident hotspots, is to be graced with a striking statue marking the area’s architectural heritage.

The three designs by Brighton artists Jon Mills, Guy Stevens and Myles Dacre are based on ammonite fossils, seen on many of the city’s Regency and Victorian buildings by Amon Wilds and his son Amon Henry Wilds.

Both used the spiralled shapes on facades of their buildings, probably as a punning reference to their forenames, at Oriental Place, Brunswick Square, Regency Square and Montpelier Crescent, among many others.

The sculpture is being commissioned as part of Brighton and Hove City Council's works to upgrade the roundabout and its approaches, where 20 accidents a year are recorded.

The council says it needs to redesign the roundabout to make it safer and eliminate accident blind spots.

A public exhibition of the shortlisted artists will run from Saturday, September 6, until Saturday, September 20 The £30,000 statue will be paid for by public donations, businesses and a range of other bodies.

The exhibition is being held at Mishon MacKay, 99-101 Dyke Road, Brighton, from 10am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

The public is being asked to give their opinions in the comments book provided or by contacting Siobhan Osgood at the council on 01273 293907.

A panel consisting of residents, retailers, councillors and council officers will select the preferred artwork at the end of September, taking the public's views into account.

The successful artwork will be unveiled in January and could be in place as early as next summer.

What do you think of the designs? Tell us below.

So the councl are going to eliminate blind spots by building a pidgeon roost in the middle of the road...Clear thinking or short "sighted" just like unwanted cycle lane cutting Hove in half and the strange revamp of the lights at the end of Blatchington Road

Call me the party pooper is you like, but is putting such 'eye catching and conversation creating' items at an accident prone road junction such a good idea?

Ive heard of councils refusing planning permissions on the basis of driver distraction, but ive not heard of them giving permission in order to create it.

As counter productive to local beauty as it may be, surely the best idea is to remove anything that causes distractions and improve the road signs.

Oh well . . .

I agree with issac hunt, It would be a distraction to motorists on an already dodgy bit of road.

I think they are missing a major problems with 7D, currently pedestrians use multiple crossings, set away from the roundabout, to get from one side to the other, the island should be used as a pedestrian crossing point with 3 or 4 controlled pedestrian crossing to it,
cycling over 7D is also a concern not address,
motor vehicles use should be cut to a minimum and drivers actively encouraged to use other routes, but that won't stop the 4x4 Waitrose brigade,

Other routes? There's hardly any other routes left.

A large eye-catching distraction in the middle of a hazardous junction. Who thought of that one!

we are a load of nimbys in brighton. if you go on the continent there roundabouts are beautiful pieces of art and this encourages cars to slow down and you only see the traffic you need to see rather than being distracted by all 7 exits. it will also brighten up an otherwise concrete blob. it could do with some perimeter pleasant low level planting too. i think for such a busy 7 exit roundabout that 20 accidents a year is not too bad, we can never eliminate all bad drivers. the last thing we need is for more lane closures narrowing etc. or the city will not be worth visiting anymore.

"only see the traffic you need to see instead of being distracted by all 7 exits". You are joking surely? The only reason there are onlyaprox 20 accidents a year is because most drivers who use the junction on a regular basis develop eyes in the back of their heads!

Having said which , the nude lady protester in the middle of the roundabout a few years back was a welcome addition, unfortunatly not many drivers looked the placard to find out what she was protesting about....
