Dozens of railway station ticket machines have been targeted by organised thieves.

Detectives are trawling CCTV footage to find the criminals after stations across Sussex and the South East were hit by theft and vandalism.

Commuters and other rail passengers have faced queues for manned ticket booths because of damage to the automatic vending machines.

British Transport Police CID teams are investigating ways to tackle the crimes, which are being treated as an organised attempt to steal thousands of pounds in cash from rail companies.

The latest spate took place between Thursday night and yesterday morning (Fri).

One 45-year-old commuter told The Argus the damage had caused queues for passengers at stations between Brighton and London Victoria line.

He said: "On Monday morning both ticket machines on the platforms at Burgess Hill station were out of action.

"The doors of the machine had been wrenched open and were hanging off their hinges.

"On Tuesday there was proper police crime scene tape around the machines.

"A member of staff told me it was a problem up and down the line."

A spokesman for railway company Southern said yesterday: "Southern has suffered a spate of thefts from ticket machines on the south coast recently, the latest being a clutch of machines last night.

"We are working very closely with the British Transport Police and are supporting them in every way we can.

"We have released CCTV footage of the thefts to them which they are currently reviewing."

It is understood that British Transport Police detectives in Sussex and surrounding areas are investigating as many as 60 crimes.

Officers believe organised groups are responsible for the damage and thefts. They have not released details of the amount of money taken by the thieves.

Where people have been arrested for similar crimes in the south police have sought to persuade magistrates to impose anti-social behaviour orders banning the culprits from the rail network as well as prison sentences.

A spokeswoman for British Transport Police said: "We can confirm there has been a series of thefts from ticket vending machines from Southern railway stations.

"We are currently reviewing CCTV and investigations are continuing."

Anyone with information about the crimes is asked to call British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

Maybe the police could examine the theft of thousands of pounds from commuters by the rail companies in exchange for having to stand all the way to London and not being able to take a leak because all the toilets on the train are broken

Agreed; maybe we should investigate who the REAL thieves are in all this...

Great news! Now maybe the train companies will put some security in place. Staffless stations are madness!

Southern are not thieves, the fares are high because the TOC's have to pay track access charges, wages, electricity, Goverment taxes ect. The Goverment chose to have a private railway.

Southern have spent over 1 million pounds training drivers for the new trains in December. You can't run many more trains on the Brighton mainline.

Maybe you can't run any MORE trains, but you could send an 8 coach instead of a 4 coach at busy times instead of sending a 12 coach train at 11:30pm on a Sunday!

The 12 coaches are on the busier services at peak times, e.g services to London. They also do not run on certain lines because 12 coaches are not cleared to run on those lines because of short platforms.

The Sunday timetables are different to week days as it doesn't require trains to be moved from different locations as much.

When the new trains are used in December it will free up some of the 4 coaches to other services but it won't fix the problem of platforms being to short.

How to fix the problem of platforms being too short : the driver stops at the far end of the platform, then when given the signal by the guard, moves the train forward a few yards to enable the passengers in the rear coaches to alight.

That will never happen, you will have to put in shunt signals and it will take too long to lock the doors and shunt the train.

To fix the problem of short platforms would be to extend them to fit atleast 6 coaches.

The Goverment will just turn all the ideas down becuase they would rather spend our taxes on giving themselves pay rises.

The platforms should be extended, at the moment these trains are no more than trams.
We need a new high speed rail network
with new trains now.
