Three boys with crew cuts are being forced to sit on their own in the school corridor – until their hair grows back.

Friends Kieron Hawkins, Max Miller and a third pupil could be in “isolation” for two weeks after getting the short cuts.

They have been given desks in separate corridors and handed school work to be getting on with.

Kieron’s father Glenn says he is furious with Oakmeeds Community College in Burgess Hill for taking the measures.

He received a phone call from Kieron’s head of year on Friday morning telling him the short haircut was not appropriate for school.

“I just think it is stupid,” Mr Hawkins said.

“Why should you have to be taught in isolation just because you have short hair? Kieron has had crew cuts before and always has quite short hair anyway.”

Mr Hawkins, of Denham Road, Burgess Hill, said he came home on Thursday night to find a pile of hair on the kitchen floor after Kieron, 14, and two of his friends used clippers to give each other grade one haircuts.

Mr Hawkins was told by the head of his son’s tutor group that Kieron was not wanted in lessons because his hair was too short and it was against the school rules.

Mr Hawkins said: “Apparently a grade two is the shortest they are allowed to go, but we have never had any letters informing us of that sort of thing.

“Some kids are allowed to go to school with long hair down to their shoulders, so why can’t Kieron have his hair as short as he wants?

“Having short hair does not affect his education or the way he learns.

“Now I have been told he has to stay in isolation until his hair grows back to a normal and acceptable length – which could take up to two weeks.”

Kieron said: “I’m not even being taught – I’m just given the work to do. It’s very boring.”

Headteacher Colin Taylor said the school had rules about haircuts which all parents and pupils were made aware of.

He said: “We have a policy that we accept no extreme haircuts and the pupils all know that. It is written in the school’s code of conduct and parents are aware of it.”
