Every morning when Brighton and Hove’s Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) opens its doors people are already queuing for the free advice service it offers.

Last year, 10,000 residents used the confidential service and over the past few years, the charity has seen more people needing help with debts.

Emily Ballantyne, CAB debt specialist, said: “Our biggest enquiry used to be benefits but now debt is the fastest growing problem for the CAB.

“Day in, day out, we see the devastating impact of debt on people’s lives and the desperation people feel about their situation. Families break up, people lose their homes and often suffer long-term depression and anxiety as a result of the worry involved.

“The free, confidential, independent debt advice that we offer can help turn things around and prevent similar problems happening again in the future.”

Brighton and Hove CAB is based in Hove Town Hall and is run by a few paid members of staff and about 30 volunteers. They are trained to deal with queries from benefits and housing to employment and consumer issues, as well as debt.

Ms Ballantyne added: “The average debt in the UK is about £20,000 but we see some people who owe four or five times that amount. What I always say to clients is whatever your fear is in terms of what’s going to happen, it won’t be that bad.”

To speak to an adviser go to a drop-in session between 9.30am and 11.30am Monday to Thursday at Hove Town Hall, 1 Tisbury Road.

Alternatively call 0845 1203710 from 1pm to 4pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays or visit www.brightonhovecab.org.uk.

Oh very helpful I'm sure.

Those that can get out and help. Those that can't issue cyber-lectures to everyone else.

He does have a point though..

Do you need SkyTV? What's wrong with Freeview? That'll save you a good £30+ a month.

Why do you need to shop in Waitrose? ASDA Smartprice is about an eighth of the price and does the job.

It's not actually that hard...

Let me tell you something AndyR

When my personal life went belly up, I got into debt. I`ll tell you what I did, I sorted myself out as no-one else wanted to know. And why did I get into debt? because I was an idiot with my money.

No cyber lectures here my friend, just plain and simple facts.

Oh right, because you didn't get any help no-one else should - great.

Good job the people who set up the NHS (even though they got no free healthcare themselves earlier in life) didn't think like that, isn't it?

Well I for one am SICK and TIRED of all this counselling this and that for what is basically in most cases a willy nilly carefree attitude to life and money.

PC has a fair point. When you can forsee a problem with debt and try to explain problems to the lenders etc, they dont want to know.

It seems that the only way to get help or advice is when you are allready uncredit worthy, an illegal immigrant, a rehabilitating criminal or an unemployed parent breeding 97 kids.

What ever happened to helping those who help themselves. What a nanny state we live in.

PC is right, it boils down to having a simple grasp of managing your lifestyle or finances.

I find getting rid of a cat saves a £10 a month at least Pontop. Put that in your pipe and smoke it

the kind of advice isnt really that construction "it won’t be that bad" attitude is one of the reasons why people get into trouble in the first place, a lack of understanding of the consequences of delinquant debt is evident and must be stamped out. They should have pictures of homeless teachers and IT consultants on the front page of every mortgage application, - the horrors of debt!!
