Two potential investors have expressed an interest in backing the multimillion-pound King Alfred scheme, according to the developer.

Josh Arghiros, director of Karis, told The Argus about the as-yet unnamed backers for the Hove development.

He will now try to finalise new financing plans before meeting bosses at Brighton and Hove City Council.

An agreement between the council and Karis to redevelop the site as part of the £290 million scheme is due to expire on November 9.

Planning permission was granted for the project in March last year.

Proposals include 751 homes in 11 buildings, including two towers up to 98 metres high.

An £80 million sports centre, small shops, a police office, a GP surgery, cafés, restaurants and public spaces are also part of the plans.

But the controversial scheme was thrown into doubt this summer after Dutch bank ING withdrew funding and Karis was forced to look for new investors.

The council’s cabinet had been due to discuss a report on the development of the scheme in September but it was deferred until October 16.

However, the date has now been pushed back again until November 20, which would be outside the parties’ agreement deadline.

Both groups will now meet this month to see whether any new financing can be put in place, and if so, whether that agreement could be extended.

Mr Arghiros said: “We are meeting to discuss a way forward and hopefully we will come away in these difficult times with maybe a bit of a smile.”

He added that two potential investors have expressed an interest in coming on board with the project.

He said: “I think the whole world is in turmoil in respect of funding at the moment.

“What I have got is some banks and investors that are interested in getting involved in the project, which shows they recognise the potential in it.”

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: “The agreement won’t necessarily expire on November 9.

“If Karis comes forward with a re-financing package before then there is the possibility that an emergency cabinet could be called to agree an extension.”

See the council ram this through without any of the promised infrastructure geeting in the way of the costs just to get it's hands on the 750 concil taxes that this over development will generate

poor Brighton and Hove. They never get it right. There should be someone on the Council who is responsible for aesthetics. Someone who has style and can block the naff ideas that never seem to end in this town. (sorry City).

Well, when this is built, I bet a lot of the people who moan about it, will actually quite like it, that's always the way with anything new and different.

Brighton needs this investment if it isn't to stagnate in my opinion, I'm all for it, and yes I live near it too.

This could have a dramatic impact for the better on the economy of this city, which let's face it at the present time, needs a bloody big boost.

I'm about to move to near the KA Centre. This will ruin everyone's view in the surrounding area and make Hove overrun with idiots in wanky apartments.

If the investors themselves said this then it might be a bit more believable.

I can see that the site need re-developing but that design is awful. Why can't they see how quickly this development will date in it's current state? It looks like those puzzles you get out of a christmas cracker.

If you're going to build something that local people hate, at least have the courtesy to tone down the design so at least the appearance is more neutral. It's going to be as ugly as Hove Town Hall! Oh forget it. I haven't got enough money to be listened to by the council.

It seems to me that our old friend Mr. Aghiros is playing for time by making out that he has backers so that he can get an extension of time when his agreement with the Council expires on 9th November. Anyway, I thought the agreement was with ING and became ineffective if they pulled out? Silly me to think an agreement means what it says when the King Alfred is involved.

New architecture doesn't immediately equal bad architecture - and no one can ever win an argument based on aesthetics. This scheme is all wrong because it would have a wholly negative impact on the environment and quality of life for local people, and only stands to benefit the fat cats. That said, the design is also plug-ugly and about as 'cutting edge' as an 80s mullet. What about an eco-friendly or recycled building?

Frank Gehry said on Radio 4 several months ago that his first building in this country was to have been in Hove, but he clearly stated "WE'RE NOT DOING THAT NOW".
Apparently Mr Aghiros is able to run such a massive project without an architect.
