A theatre is set to embark on an exciting new venture after announcing its first resident company.

Brighton Dome and Festival will begin a unique collaboration with the Hofesh Shechter Company in November.

The company, one of the hottest properties on the international dance scene, will have offices at Brighton Dome and will create new work there during a three-year residency.

The venture will be launched with a performance by the company of Uprising and In Your Rooms in the Concert Hall, Brighton, on November 18 as part of a Dance Touring Partnership British tour.

The venue will then host research and development for future pieces and present several works, including a new commission and a major education project as part of Brighton Festival 2009.

It will also premiere a new full length work in May 2010.

Andrew Comben, chief executive of Brighton Dome and Festival, said: “I’m delighted to be welcoming Hofesh Shechter Company to Brighton and to be forging a close relationship with such an internationally significant company at this key stage in their development.

“I love their work and this new association really indicates what an exciting future Brighton Dome and Brighton Festival has to look forward to.”

Choreographer Hofesh Shechter formed his company this year and the group embarked on an extensive tour with his double bill Uprising/In Your Rooms. The rise of the company has taken it across the Britain, Europe and to the US and next year it will perform in Asia, Australia and Canada.

Sally Abbott, director of arts for the Arts Council England South East said: “Arts Council England is proud to be supporting Hofesh and his company.

“In both his performance and education work, all I see is total commitment to excellence both for the participant and the audience.”
