As show concepts go, Zoe Lyons’s decision to focus on the mantras that ricochet around her brain each day was a definite winner.
Ranging from desires to cut down on her drinking to guilting herself into going green, the structure allowed her to move easily between subjects, be they topical bits on the credit crunch or more left-of-field, like her early-morning dog-walking mantra: “Will today be the day I find a body on the beach?”.
The show mixed great one-liners, like her award-winning dig at Amy Winehouse’s self-harming, with hilarious observational stories, including a nightmare nine hours on the Megabus, and a very physical delivery – as in her closing description of a typical non-boozy school night.
Judging by the reaction of the sold-out Pavilion Theatre audience to her homecoming gig, next year should hopefully see Zoe filling the Corn Exchange.
