Firework starts house fire

Arsonists started a fire in a house by throwing a firework through an open window.

The blaze broke out in Silverdale Avenue, Hove, at 7.49am on Saturday.

Firefighters were called out but the flames were put out by residents before they arrived.

An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Fortunately this was only a small fire because it was extinguished before it could spread beyond the kitchen but it was a dangerous act and we urge people to be sensible with fireworks."

Last November the Brighton home of Cathy and Luke Frankland and their two-year-old twins Joshua and Robin was gutted by fire after a stray firework flew through a window.

fireworks need to be banned to all except those operating professional displays. They are a boon to chavs and a menace to the rest of us

I totally agree that the sale of fireworks to the general public must stop, I can't understand why it is so easy to buy explosives. I have a shotgun licence and have to be rigorously checked by the police, make sure the guns are kept in a locked steel gun cabinet (that is also inspected by the police)+ lots of other rules and regulations that I have to abide by (and rightly so), but to be honest I could do more damage with some of the very powerfull fireworks (explosives) than I could with a shotgun, one of the fieworks I saw last year had more gunpowder in it than 24 shotgun cartridges!
