Arsonists started a fire in a house by throwing a firework through an open window.
The blaze broke out in Silverdale Avenue, Hove, at 7.49am on Saturday.
Firefighters were called out but the flames were put out by residents before they arrived.
An East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Fortunately this was only a small fire because it was extinguished before it could spread beyond the kitchen but it was a dangerous act and we urge people to be sensible with fireworks."
Last November the Brighton home of Cathy and Luke Frankland and their two-year-old twins Joshua and Robin was gutted by fire after a stray firework flew through a window.
