Brighton's i360 tower has been further delayed – but those behind the project insist it will still be built.

Work on the 183m tower was originally due to begin in July 2007 but was put back when the credit crisis began to affect major building projects.

Earlier this year, the West Pier Trust and architects Marks Barfield said they hoped work would begin this autumn.

But the Argus can reveal the plans have now been delayed again, with work on the site now unlikely to begin this year.

The cost of the tower, which is being built at the shore end of the derelict West Pier, has also risen since the original estimate of £20 million. The planned completion date of 2010 is now in doubt.

Dr Geoff Lockwood, chairman of the West Pier Trust, said: “The project is still being affected by the credit crunch and Marks Barfield is still trying to get the money together.

“They are due to update us at our annual general meeting on November 19.”

Despite the setback, Dr Lockwood insisted the project has not been scrapped.

He said: “It’s not like a lot of projects which are falling by the wayside. It definitely will happen.”

A spokeswoman for Marks Barfield confirmed the company would be attending the meeting in November.

A number of major building projects across Sussex have been scrapped or delayed because of the current financial climate, including the King Alfred in Hove and the Brighton Marina redevelopment.

nothing ever gets built in Brighton don't know why they ever bother wasting their money on the plans. The only building work that ever gets approved is the ever increasing amount of road work.

Well not quite nothing gets built, they recently spent £100 million on the Brighton Station New Quarter development, and £90 million to build Churchill Square between 1996 and 1998....

I think you will find (and I know this first hand from my friends in construction) that virtually ALL major projects in the UK have been cancelled/delayed due to the credit crunch and the downturn in thehousing market. So it's not just Brighton is it!

agreed Harwood, most developments have ground to a halt because of a lack of funding including my new shed! grrr it just seems more prevalent in Btown, with Marina, King Alfred and now this (not that I particularly want any of them to built!) although I have heard on the Grapevine that a large proportion of the properties built/being constructed at the New England Quater are still empty?

I predicted this last week on this very forum, (under the King Alfred delay thread), people may see me as a fool (or an old Tv station that lost out to Meridain tv), but I do know what I am talking about.

The following ideas/buildings will NEVER be built - mark my words ;

Falmer B&H stadium

suprise suprise NOT. The labour admistration has dragged its heals on so many projects except barmy road schemes etc. that it is now too late for these projects. How will tourism exist without attractions. We are way behind in the shopping stakes, no ice rink, no decent leisure centre, conference centre, rubbish marina, the list goes on. Residents were excited and approving of the i360, with the 2012 olympics around the corner, surely now is the time to invest so it is up and running just in time. this city will continue to decay unless the tories pick the baton and run forward. one thing we certainly do not want out of this is more 1 and 2 bed boxy flats that lie empty for a long time, through lack of demand, lets hope we can learn something from the mistakes of cities like manchester and birmingham and just develop the facilities and infrastructure.

well this daft Pod thing is set to blow over and kill hundreds of people at the first blustery gale anyways, so I for one am quite glad it hasn't been built yet.

The 'British Airways' London eye went ahead so maybe we could have the 'Brighton & Hove Bus and Coach Company' Brighton I go ahead, they seem to have a lot of influence in Kings House and an awful lot of our money, maybe more, when they shove the fares up again before Christmas.

Bit like Falmer really. It'll be years before frivolities like these are funded. Hooray say I!

what a surprise!
the money is there, i guarantee it, councellors will be holding it back until they know next years bonus is in the bag, just like they do with most projects. money is under a lot more scrutiny now, they cannot slip the odd 10 thousand into bonuses which was earmarked for the project. why do you think these projects cost so much?? they over value the job to work in their backhander! fact.

crunchie : evidence?
just the response one expects when under suspicion. like a burgler who's been caught the next day after a robbery who says "it wasnt me, it wasnt me, prove it..."

I wasn't aware I was under suspicion. I just don't think it's good to throw accusations of corruption around without any proof other than your own small-minded prejudices.

In the case of the burglar, you might remember that we have something called 'law' in the country where the police do have to prove it.

Yeah but its well documented how many in Authority have at worst let greed get in the way and they dont stick to teh law and at best have been inefficient and wasteful..often we only hear about it when people get found out so I think you can eaccept some peoples outlook on such matters.

I doubt it will, and they have started constructing the parts to build the main tower in a Dutch factory, see this story on the argus today!

"Work starts on i360 tower - in Holland

3:58pm Wednesday 22nd October 2008

Work has begun on Brighton’s i360 tower despite the project being delayed by another year.

Steelwork for the tower is being pressed at a factory in Holland and the people behind the proposed 167- yard tall icon say it will open in 2011.
"

Yay, I look forward to it's opening, and I very much doubt it will fall over and kill me when I'm up in the pod!
